i see YouTubers using pictures of Pokemon, characters from video games, images of athletes all the time. is this considered "free to use"? i dont understand copyright

From what I understand if you keep it under 30 seconds per clip you won't have a problem. Also, if you make your video then try to upload it to youtube. YouTube will flag it if it is finds copywrited material. If they do, no big deal. You can't monetize your video then but you can still share it. Or you can edit it and try and find what was flagged. I have been hit with copywrited material before and I just de-monetized my video and youtube never punished me for it.
