There not real. Just think about it. All the other people using them and the spirit just happens to come to your house? (i know theres more than one spirit but...come on) I used one when i was younger and the people i was using it with were pulling the glass thing. So no, i think the people who are saying they are real were just paranoid when they used and then saw stuff

just stumbled across this while looking through the forums and i have a few points:
1. i was very skeptical about anything to do with spirits or ghosts and i didn't believe in any of it and that there is something after death, but.
My mother visited people who can tell you things about your future or past and while some of them were very much un true and could be told to anyone they told her things no one knew not even me, she contacted members of the family that died 30+ years before i was even around, with this i then believe that there is something there or how would she have found out this information.
2. it depends what you believe if you go in not expecting it to work i fully think that it won't work but if you go in wanting to contact someone. the concept of a ouija board isn't to contact demons but to contact people who are no longer with us and therefore not all experiences will be of negative nature

They use a method called 'cold reading.' If you're interested in this I would watch some of Derren Brown's shows and episodes. He is a very famous psychological magician in the UK and he explains how people do things like this and other things like faith healing.
In his most recent show he switched half way through to playing a faith healer and for the rest of the show he was healing people. Everyone knew that he wasn't actually doing anything, but the methods he used were so strong that people still felt pain disappear. If I'm not mistaken he did an episode of one of his shows where he went to the US to meet psychics and learn about their methods undercover. At the end he did his own gathering under the watch of a real 'psychic' and she believed that he was a very gifted psychic himself.
The methods are very difficult for us to understand, but if you imagine what Sherlock Holmes does when he looks at someone and then combine that with the person filling in gaps in their own mind it is a very effective tool.
Also, a lot of information about people's past is public record.
So depending on how long before the meeting your mother gave them her name that could explain the past side of things.

they didn't ask for a name or any information only that she bring a piece of jewellery to the reading and that she answers if she feels like she wants to, thats where i was really intrigued by it

You are free to believe whatever you want to believe but I would believe cold reading, blind luck, phone tracing, paying off friends for information, and a million other things before I would believe that these people can contact the dead.
They operate under the assumption that the dead can actually think, let alone be contacted by people and then only certain people? Fortunately for people in this business nobody asks questions like, "Why can't they contact me directly" and if they do then they are the only authority on whatever nonsense answer they come up with because nobody else has "the power."
Whether they know it or not they are all frauds until they can prove otherwise and they can prove it if they want to. James Randi has a $1 million reward open for any psychic who can demonstrate that their ability is real. That reward has been up for grabs since the 1960's and nobody has claimed it yet.

Personally speaking, yes I believe the boards are legit and from personal experience.. it really all depends, it took me a long time to build courage to finally try it out with a few friends but once I did, I didn't really regret it but that doesn't mean you wont regret it if you do try it. You can summon bad spirits and good spirits, I and my friends summoned luckily a good spirit, a fireman that died in the 1970s in a house fire near to where we were using the board, he just gave his name, age, how he died etc. It was pretty exciting but I was totally on edge the whole time. Try it but be warned that it doesn't always end good so be cautious.
