To start off with you will need to know what firmware you are currently running on.
I am currently running firmware 4.1 on my ipod touch and want to downgrade to 4.0.
to do this you will need to go to this website:
http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/
[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

Step two:
Connect your ipod and go to itunes and make sure you know where you placed
your firmware you downloaded in the step above.

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

Step three:
Next hold down the shift key and press either update or restore it does not matter which you press and they both do the same thing.
[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

last step:
select the firmware you wish to use and press open once you have done this it will begin to switch firmwares and you are good to go!

If done correctly you should have been downgraded!

Congratualations on downgrading your ipod, iphone, ipad or even your apple tv[img]

P.S. I suggest you download the firmwares off of mozilla firefox because when you download it they will become zip files and not ipsw files.

also if your getting an error message when putting ipsw to downgrade it i will make another post on what to do to fix it

edit: here is the guide for the compatibility error: Forums/viewtopic/p=5452626.html#5452626

This doesn't work. Apple has stopped signing all softwares previous to 4.2, they stop signing all software below the current version so that this can't be done. Basically, you need your SHSH blobs saved on cydia's server, then redirect iTunes to cydia's server so it gets the ok to downgrade. Each device has a unique ECID that cannot be faked or modified. When attempting to restore to a different version, iTunes sends your ECID to Apple, and Apple's server will either approve or deny the restore. If the software is no longer signed, it basically tells iTunes to give an error and cancel the restore. But, when your redirect iTunes to Cydia's server WITH your SHSH blobs, which are only obtainable by being jailbroken on the lower version previously, Cydia tells iTunes it's ok to restore. So, that's why this won't work :p

you see when you click on the firmware and it loads it stops it from installing.

Apple stopped letting people choose there firmware years ago
