This is my current build and i'm looking to upgrade the RAM to 16GB due to it not being able to to handle some games, any recommendations?

How much are you willing to spend? If you have something like £200 I'd recommend getting a new motherboard for DDR4 RAM. If you only have £40-50 then I'd recommend any stick of 8gb doesn't really matter which. Just make sure it's compatible.

Upgrading socket just for DDR4 RAM is stupid. Also £200 is not enough for a new CPU, 16GB DDR4, and a compatible motherboard unless you get an i3-6100 which would be a downgrade from your Xeon. Even then, you'll probably still be spending a little more than £200.

OP- While many games now are utilising more than 8GB RAM, 8GB should be fine for most games. It's likely that a CPU and/or GPU upgrade would be more beneficial. What specifically are you having problems with?

Also we need a budget and currency.

As for a RAM upgrade, your motherboard only had 2 DIMM slots and they're both being used so you couldn't even just add another 1x8GB or 2x4GB. You'd have to buy a new kit altogether.

Yeah that is why i was just thinking of upgrading to 2x8GB of DDR3 due to the fact of only having two slots.

It's mainly H1Z1: KOTK that is having problems which is sort of like micro-stuttering, i was watching loads while playing and it seems that my RAM is maxing out while playing but CPU/GPU load seems to be fine, if i play with google chrome open as well it creates a much bigger FPS issue which is why i had a suspicion it was the RAM that was causing it. As far as other games i haven't played many others that require 8GB RAM or more but i probably will in the future which is why i was thinking about upgrading it. This PC is 2 years old now so might be time to upgrade a few of the components.

I have a budget of ~500 GBP so if you think a GPU/CPU or any other upgrade would be beneficial then please do recommend.

I just upgraded from 8gb to 16gb and only saw a performance boost in BF1, especially as the maps become more war torn and filled with debris. Helped with a microstutter i had too, and get about 10 fps boost.

Can't figure out why my new HDD shat the bed though ...

Alright, well the GTX 970 should be fine. Your only logical GPU upgrade from there would be a GTX 1070, which you could do and get 16GB DDR3 as well with our £500. However, I've heard that more, faster RAM really helps bring up the minimum and average FPS in H1Z1. I've also heard that it likes higher clocked CPU's. In which case, an upgrade to an unlocked CPU and overclocking would help.

GPU;

or if you want a CPU upgrade and RAM, you'll want a new motherboard to overclock anyway so you may as well just go Skylake with DDR4 tbh.

A bit over budget but you get an unlocked i7, 16GB high speed RAM, SLI/XFire support with a compatible PSU, and a beefy but cheap cooler and a nice fan for the cooler.

Third option, if you can hold on to your current set up for a little longer, Intel's Kaby Lake is almost guarantee'd to release within the next couple of weeks, and AMD's Zen should be out soon after. Might be worth waiting a little for those.

Decided after waiting a few months i'll bump this back up to get a new build. FPS issues have started to get worse and most games i play the RAM usage is just maxing out. Probably need a whole new system really but i'm not sure. Current Build is in main post, budget is around £750

Ryzen is literally so close at this point that I wouldn't bother doing anything with CPU/RAM for now. Otherwise, like I said before, just upgrade to faster DDR3 RAM, 16GB if you want. I'm not sure why you think you need a whole new system if your RAM is maxed out lol.
