I would think it depends where you are trying to download the file from? I never had problems with mediafire but its a thought.

mediafire doesn't use the same protocols as every download site ever, just like running a VPN you will either notice your speed dip, stay the same, or increase when the VPN uses different connection protocols than your direct connection.
so yes, it is likely your connection, that or mediafire is under a heavy traffic load which i doubt.
