If you're struggling to at BF1 at 1080p, something else is the issue because a GTX 970 doesn't struggle with BF1 at 1080p. You also should not have any issues in any of the other titles you mentioned, other than The Witcher 3. I don't know if you're talking about Watch Dogs 1 or 2, but if it's Watch Dogs 2, your CPU is holding you back, not GPU. If it's Watch Dogs 1, you shouldn't be having any issue. A $700+ GPU is not logical for a 1080p monitor. You're going to get more use out of getting a new monitor first.

my build is as follows
CPU: i5 4690k
GPU: evga gtx 970 ftw
motherboard: gigabyte gaming 5lga 1150
HDD: toshiba 5600rpm(dont know the exact model)
SSD: no SSD YET
RAM: pretty sure its insignia 8gb ddr3 1600mhz
PSU: higher power 600w bronze
opitical drive: some cheap LG drive

Um, you're going to need to replace that PSU before you add a 1080Ti. You're also going to want to add an SSD first. 4690k and GTX 970 should not have an issue with playing BF1 at 1080p. You shouldn't be below 60FPS in that game. If you are, something is wrong so check temperatures and load.

+1 to this.

So OP; I actually went into my garage, found what parts I could that would best match your system, except I did not have a 600w PSU -- hell I don't think I've ever had a Bronze rated PSU -- I had to use a EVGA G2 750 Gold, and I used a STRIX 970. This was the only pair of DDR3 RAM I could find without tearing through everything in my garage. Thankfully I still had a 1080p monitor in there too. Everything was set to stock settings, no overclock or anything.

You mentioned you didn't have an SSD in your system, so I went ahead and installed BF1 on a HDD. The reason there is 4 storage devices in here, because I forgot which SSD I had Windows 8 on and I thought I had BF1 installed on one of these HDD, which I didn't.

I planned to use RivaTuner with Afterburner to fully get an in-depth view of real time temps, frequency and of course FPS, however I had to install both and set them up, so I decided to use the in game FPS overlay and use Steam screenshot with Steam's shitty file compression. If you're having a hard time seeing the FPS, right click the image, click "view image" and it'll be full size.

First pair of images, on the video option menu. I uncapped the FPS to hit a maximum of 999 FPS. On the menu I get 176 FPS, nothing special, it's the menu. All settings are on Ultra, with FOV adjusted to my preference, whether that really affects FPS or not, I don't know, I have never noticed in a game when changing FOV if it drops or increases FPS.

So loading into the game was obviously the most obscure of everything I was going all over the place with FPS, but never dipping below 300 FPS, again, this is like the menu screen, but a still image so nothing special. In this image I was at 638 FPS.

Now comes the fun part when I first loaded into the game to pick which squad I wanted, I was on the verge of going under 60 FPS, however after barely 2 seconds, it went back up to 71 FPS.

The next set of screenshots is just random screenshots while trying out a quick game. Not once did I dip under 60 FPS. I could not use vehicles or grenade spam because the server owner disabled that stuff, the only explosions allowed were gas grenades and incendiary grenades, that's it. I did not spend too much time trying to find servers where I can get into explosion spam because it seems this game is on the verge of dying out like Battlefield Hardline or just no one is on at 7 PM.

As 13 has stated, something else is wrong. Temperatures would be my main idea, make sure to monitor them. I never went above 65c on my GPU when I ALT+TAB'ed really quick to check and my CPU was never above 52c while playing the game. Make sure yours aren't hitting very high temps. I also want to add onto what 13 has said and avoid getting a 1080TI for just a 1080p monitor. I would even be against getting a 1070 unless you had a 1440p monitor.

Right now your main concerns are figuring out what is making your FPS tank like they are, getting a new PSU, adding an SSD, getting your new monitor then thinking about getting the 1080TI. Jumping right into a new GPU while you're experiencing these issues when it's not your 970 (unless your 970 is dying,) will be more of a hassle and may even put a bad taste in your mouth, where you think you just spent about $700 or about £565 and the performance is not what you expected.

playing bf1 on nvidia geforces optimal settings for me puts my gpu around 69c and my cpu at about 55c give or take 5 degrees on both of those. my system temp overall never reaches above 75c. im not saying im at a constant like 30fps or even 45fps i can get a solid 60fps but i have those moments where they drop. also my main issues were in GTA 5 and need for speed but i think it was due to no SSD. i would be driving you know my proto x80 really fast and the road would just disappear and i fall under the map then it crashes that issue has happened a few times in gta 5 almost everytime i played need for speed hot pursuit i think or the newest need for speed. note i always go with what nvidia geforce tells me is "optimal" for my gpu. im not the one to tinker with settings aslong as it looks as good as it can im good.

Yeah, that would be because you don't have an SSD, hence my suggestion of getting an SSD and nice new monitor before a GPU upgrade.

When you use Nvidia's optimal settings, check what the resolution is being played at. I don't know if this was fixed from when I used to it, but when I played CSGO on the 970 build, I would use Nvidia's optimal settings which would try to force the resolution to 2560x1440 for CSGO. While that isn't a problem on CSGO, if it's still attempting that on BF1, that's where you may be experiencing FPS drops. I know you mentioned you're not a tinker with settings, but it's really not too hard to do, plus it gives you control over what you want to see, if the lights or glares are too bright, you can turn them off, if shadows aren't visible you can turn them on, ect. I would look at your Nvidia settings, make sure it's not trying to push the resolution or trying to change the resolution scale on BF1, I had my resolution scale on 100% to hit 1920x1080, if that's higher, you're stressing your GPU. If everything is all good there, try the game out again. After you get that all settled I would take 13's suggestion of an SSD to alleviate what you've been experiencing in other games, get a new monitor or upgrade PSU first (whichever is easier for you) then get the 1080TI.

13 wrote No idea. Intel could release cannon Lake in a year with vastly superior IPC. It's still perfectly time for the time being. 4 cores with no hyper threading is pretty lackluster in certain games but an unlocked i5 is still going to be fine. People are still rocking 2nd gen i5s without issue. For the most part, GPU is much more important. Watch Dogs 2 and Cities Skylines are two examples of games that heavily utilise more than 4 cores/threads.

Assuming you're gaming at 1080p, a GTX 1080Ti is an absolutely ridiculous idea. Even a GTX 1070 is more than enough for 1080p.

I came up with a great solution considering a 1080ti is $700 I'll split the difference and get a 4k monitor and 1070 at the same time and the PSU is no problem I can replace that at the time aswell cord managements not my strong suit but I'll make it happen.
