Let's talk about the terrible ideology in our country. Students are expected to pay their way through college. In reality, it is unrealistic to expect students to pay upwards of $20,000 for tuition while making 18000 a year IF working full time. The idea of the full time college student is severely damaged when required to work a full time job. A typical thought behind studying is 2 or 3 hours study for every hour spent in class. With the standard 15 hour course load, this means that a full time student should be spending upwards of 30 hours a week on studying alone. I would absolutely love for someone to explain to me how the math of a full time job, and full time student could possibly add up? Is this really the future generations of the past had in mind? The heavy burden that current education places causes many students to have to put off education in order to live and finish at all. The future of this country will be one drowning in debt.

Now we have the wonderful idea of Expected Family Contribution, and the idiocy of the Fafsa. The entire American college funding system is so flawed, it is more realistic for me to learn German, fly across the world, and attend a German college, than to be able to graduate even at an in state college without having mountains of debt. EFC is the expected contribution parents are expected to pay for their child education, but at what point is one adult required to help support another? We can't even do that in basic society with the homeless. Plans such as Obamacare have blown up with hatred towards supporting those less fortunate, but somehow, somewhere, someone thought it was a good system to support the education of this country's future on handouts from parents?
Even worse, the parents income can completely crush a student's chances at any financial aid. Parents living on the other side of the world can remove any chances of reduced expenses from colleges. Even if you dont have a parent living within a 250 radius, that student will not become independent until over the age of 25. The same age that the student would have finished a 4 year degree based on the standard plan. The cost of living causes a need for a full time job, and without having large amounts of merit scholarships, the only option becomes student loans to pay for classes.

I dont know about our department of education, but personally I have a hard time believing these decisions to benefit the greatest country in the world. Instead of focusing on these major issues, we have seen more than 100 anti-LGBT bills pass while the country ignores the real issues on the table. We have spent so much time and energy deciding who can merry who even though many human rights laws clearly state this answer. Meanwhile, Oklahoma has noticed a 50% increase in the amount of earthquakes it receives in a year. This state now has been rated having the most earthquakes of any place in the world. So Ill ask, where do our priorities as a country really lie?

I must be living in a different world because I will be getting my RN license debt free. Few points I would like to add. Most of the people that complain about cost of college are the ones that are trying to go to a university instead of a community college. Financial aid pays for more then enough, even after i payed for my classes i ended up with an extra 800$ or so to spend. I would also like to add that i am 21 have a full time job and a full time student and was able to claim independence. I guess i just fail to see how the education system is so flawed.

Many students make the terrible decision of going far away for college only for the reason of "getting away" or because "it's nice". However, they are paying around $50,000 to do this. Going in undecided and coming out $200,000 in debt and jobless. Very corrupt, high schools just tell kids to choose a college they like instead of smart choices academically and financially. Creative thinkers will be able to work around this and come out with a job paying back much less. Good topic.

A lot of people graduate debt free or pay it off very quickly afterwards, it is a little pricey but is it ridiculous? no. Like some of the other users noted, bad decision making goes into a lot of people's problems with college. Going to a community college and transferring makes it pretty easily affordable assuming youre going after a degree that has value

I work full-time, so I just took college classes part-time when I could. I never had to pay a dime for tuition, so doesn't bother me any. I dont really plan on getting a degree any time soon, it's not like college means too much.

If you don't go to a university or stay at college it can be relatively cheap.
