I wanna know how the TTG community feels about this.
Should knowing how to READ, WRITE, and SPEAK a language be required before establishing residency?
I believe it should be mandatory. It's one thing if you're going on vacation to Japan for a few weeks from America but if you're going to live somewhere you should absolutely have to know the native language. I myself am from America and I work at a BJ's Wholesale club as a cashier ATM, and there are soooo many people whether they're Spanish, Russian, Polish, Asian, etc. and they can't even communicate with me or sign the keypad when they use their card because they don't know how to read in English. It just makes me wonder how they get by on a day to day basis and how they interact with other Americans.
How do you guys feel about this topic?

No, if I want to move to Ireland, I'm not going to learn Irish. Irish is a dead language, nobody speaks it. Might as well tell me I have to have an accent if I want to move to Australia from America.
I understand where you're coming from, with certain things yes, people should know the language at least some, but not make them learn it because it's mandatory, it's not a dictatorship.

Vial wrote I think thats stupid tbhIt's Gaelic I'm pretty sure but hardly anyone speaks it there. This mainly applies to countries where you go from one continent to another. Example, someone comes to the USA from Argentina or I go to China from the USA. It's a huge change, not just a few words different.

at a basic and decent level ya
however I don't think people NEED to know a language before moving.
They should at least attempt it though when they actually get in the country. Learning a language fluently can take years and for people moving as soon as possible can be a matter of life and death you dont know.
one thing that annoys me is those old racists who call others idiots for not knowing a language when these people moving over can be doctors etc when the person calling them stupid can be jobless.

Ireland's primary language is English, hence you should be able to speak English if you live there. OP was referring to people that can't speak the main language of a country, which Irish isn't the main language in Ireland.
On topic though, I've been on holidays to different countries and it's just awkward and a hassle trying to communicate with people when you speak two completely different languages. You shouldn't live or move to a country if you cant speak or be willing to learn their main language.

Motivational wroteI know our primary langauge is english lol.English is the most spoken langauge in the world so maybe it would be better for people in other countries to learn english instead of people moving there to learn their langauge if that makes sense.Vial wrote I think that's stupid tbh

To be fair though, English seems to be the third most spoken language. It's behind Chinese and Spanish.
