I would honestly, honestly just let the first supply go. There has been plenty of times whether CPU, GPU, motherboard or any other piece of hardware, where people pre-order the item or attempt to buy it when it is in stock first day, only to be charged and their order not go through or just flat out delayed. This case I would not be surprised if it happens again. You might place the order, you might get charged, you might get the invoice in your email and/or physical address, but it also very well could happen that you happen to land on the order where they just ran out of hardware one buyer prior.

If you do plan to test your luck, I would hit a physical store instead of online. If you have a Microcenter or Frys near you, try to get there an hour or two before they open tomorrow, just in case there is a line and get what you need as hassle free as possible.

Apologies for late reply. I believe they are normally back in stock within a week or two; however, that does vary depending on the vendor. I would also wait until full benchmarks are out. Linus did a benchmark video and for gaming it seemed like the i5-8400 was beating the i7-8700k in most games at 1080p by a few FPS. Rendering seemed to favour Ryzen and Threadripper, with some 8700k benchmarks being very close. There were even a few times the 7700k was above the 8700k on some benchmarks. Giving a week or two for supplies to be ready again, will give enough time for definite benchmarks to make your purchase.
