For the same reason that the UN has rules about intervening when a country is committing a genocide.
The squalor and poverty that people in North Korea are subjected to is beyond inhumane and should not be tolerated by any civilized society.
Unfortunately, people see only what North Korea allows people to see of their country, Pyongyang and their side of the DMZ.
Pyongyang looks, as you would expect it to, like a modern city with all of the amenities that you would have in London, or Paris, so - if not for the lack of human beings walking or driving around - it could be mistaken for any other eastern city.
Their side of the DMZ looks relatively similar to the South Korean side, aside from the noticeable height difference of the soldiers.
For these reasons it is difficult to get people to rationally or emotionally empathize with North Korean citizens because we never actually see them that often. We see their theatrics at funerals of state leaders, but not the real people going about their daily lives.
So North Korea is viewed as an alien land who we should only be concerned with when it comes to their nuclear capabilities.
It is my strong suspicion that if journalists had as much access to North Korea as they do to places like Ethiopia and Yemen, the discussion surrounding North Korea would be very different.
So, it isn't about the US having to dominate the entire world, it's about finding a way to make an unnaturally unintelligent man stop treating his population like they are worth less than he is.
Obviously this will never happen though, unless by some miracle the next 'dear leader' is a competent human being.

Agreed with Eli. They left it too long. North Korea is the superior of them both.
