So The World Health Organization, the health arm of the United Nations, has included a recognition of gaming addiction in their newest internal classification of diseases revision.

That classification, or the ICD-11, is due out in 2018 and the current draft points to prioritization of gaming above all else and impaired control over the act as behavior indicating an addiction.

"The behavior pattern is of sufficient severity to result in significant impairment in personal, family, social, educational, occupational, or other important areas of functioning," reads the current WHO draft. "The gaming behavior and other features are normally evident over a period of at least 12 months in order for a diagnosis to be assigned, although the required duration may be shortened if all diagnostic requirements are met and symptoms are severe."

Official recognition means that it's likely official diagnoses are likely not far down the line.

Addiction is real. Gaming addiction is real. Yes, this may be over-diagnosed, but it is a real thing. People have died in front of their monitors during gaming sessions. People's lives have been ruined. Simple rule of thumb: If your gaming gets in the way of vital parts of life, then it's an addiction that has to be acknowledged. Not all gamers are addicts, obviously. Most gamers aren't. However, this addition is necessary in my eyes.

Tbh I'm not gonna lye this is insane and true I am addicted to video games lol, I play 8-15 hours a day it's cause I love games. I know it's a lot but my life will change real soon and I gotta stop doing this. Most people also get game depression so if they don't play they get depressed is what I heard.. I can last couple weeks without the game but most people can't. The reason I spend 8-15 hrs is cause it keeps shit off my mind

Playing videogames is a way to escape reality and it rewards your dopamine receptors in your brain, so of course you can get addicted to it just like the internet and fruit machines.
