Thirteen Russians have been criminally charged for interfering in the 2016 US election to help Donald Trump, the office of Robert Mueller, the special counsel, announced on Friday.

Mueller's office said 13 Russians and three Russian entities, including the notorious state-backed "troll farm" the Internet Research Agency, had been indicted by a federal grand jury in Washington DC.

A 37-page indictment alleges that the Russians' operations "included supporting the presidential campaign of then-candidate Donald J Trump ... and disparaging Hillary Clinton," his Democratic opponent.

The Russians allegedly posed as Americans to operate bogus social media accounts, buy advertisements and stage political rallies. They stole the identities of real people in the US to post online and built computer systems in the US to hide the Russian origin of their activity, according to the indictment.

I don't see this as a big surprise. People have been accusing Russians of rigging the election since trump started running. Sad to see it was actually something that happened though. I could never have believed it until I read it.

Not that Sanders has anything to do with this in the first place, I don't understand what you're trying to sway? Instead of being belligerent and upset, understand that if that is true, why are you acting like this is sports? Pointing fingers and say "well he did this too", doesn't make the situation any better. What you should be more worried about is how Russia influenced political figures and put his money anywhere and everywhere. Russia didn't want a certain person to win, if he saw that one Presidential nominee was causing more divide then the other, he pulled in more resources to make sure that person got elected. The only thing Russia wants is to further divide the US, cripple the government and install fear and untrust into the citizens. If the US is full of angry 2 sided citizens who don't trust the government and requires to the government to start putting more of its time fixing itself and more out of international affairs, and leaves Russia to do as it pleases in places like Ukraine and Syria, then Russia did exactly what it wanted and succeeded in their plan.

The main big thing Russia wants out of the US is for it to go into a civil war. A civil war would require the US to pull all resources out of Syria and start focusing on whats going on at home, thus leaving Russia in charge of Syria, opening a huge door for oil and money.

Hence why Russia is also backing both Pro-gun and Anti-gun movements currently. They know damn well if they can cause enough chaos with that topic. They know damn well if the government bans guns, that'll cause a civil war in the US, and that's exactly what they're hoping for.

They also supported Hillary Clinton in some ways, and they also hurt Trump in some ways.

For instance, the indictment says that they staged a rally in New York for pro-Trump voters while staging another one on exactly the same day for anti-Trump voters just to stoke up tensions and divide people.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein said there is no allegation in the indictment that any American was a knowing participant in the scheme -- nor is there any allegation that the scheme affected the outcome of the election.

This is the most important part of the whole indictment in my opinion.

People have been acting like this proves that Trump was working with the Russians all along, and that the only reason why he won was because of Russian interference when there isn't any evidence to support those claims and this indictment, which comes after a year of investigation, doesn't even make those claims.

They didn't do anything illegal with regards to the election though. Strictly speaking all they did that was illegal was identity theft and fraud.
What they did with those stolen identities is tangential and while it is interesting, it doesn't really matter.
There is no evidence to suggest that they affected the outcome of the election and there is no evidence to suggest that Trump knew what was happening.

As for sewing distrust within the US, let's not act like the US would be one big happy family if these Russians hadn't interfered.
Black Lives Matter would still exist, the Gun Control debate would still be going strong, and the Right wing/Left wing divide would still be huge.
