Canada threatens retaliation on Trump tariffs
Greg Nash
Canada's government vowed Thursday to take "responsive measures" if the Trump administration imposes stiff tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum products imported into the U.S.
Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland said President Trump's announcement that he plans to impose a 25 percent tariff on steel imports and a 10 percent tariff on aluminum imports is "absolutely unacceptable."
"It is entirely inappropriate to view any trade with Canada as a national security threat to the United States," she said in a statement.
"We will always stand up for Canadian workers and Canadian businesses," she said. "Should restrictions be imposed on Canadian steel and aluminum products, Canada will take responsive measures to defend its trade interests and workers."
It was not immediately clear how Canada could retaliate against U.S. tariffs.
Trump announced Thursday in a meeting with business leaders that he would impose tough tariffs on steel and aluminum imports as a way to level what he has deemed an unfair playing field for U.S. manufacturers.
The Commerce Department released a report last month declaring steel and aluminum imports from China and elsewhere a national security threat.
That report included an array of recommendations for Trump that included potential quotas and tariffs on steel and aluminum imports. By moving to impose the 25 percent tariff on imported steel and the 10 percent tariff on imported aluminum, Trump opted for some of the harshest measures recommended by trade officials.
