So basically, I have an acquaintance who is selling a pc, and I am thinking about buying it. He says he'll give it to me for $800, and as I don't know too much about PCs, I'm wondering if it's a good deal.

Here are the details:

AMD 8350 fx 4.3ghz, AMD rx480 4gb graphics card (handles witcher at high graphics), 16gb ram dual channel, 2tb HDD Seagate black label storage drives, 500wtt psu, thermltak eclipse rgb case, 3 140mm fan (1rgb). 4months old barely used. Windows 10 key. Great for work station, and gaming at high to extreme settings. Handles PlayersUnknownbattleground at 60+fps.

Thanks in advance

Part of me wants to say a very thin line of yes, but most of me wants to say no. The reason a thin part of me wants to say yes, is simply because of GPU prices. They are coming down slowly, but a 4GB RX480 on Newegg is going for $549.99 and even on Amazon an RX480 ASUS Dual Fan is basically $480 -- stupid overpriced considering this card was very often in the high $200's/mid $300 range but trying to get a GPU right now in a lot of instances is going to break your wallet.

I would honestly ask him what brand the RAM is, if he knows the timings and the clock speed of the RAM. Motherboard would be good to know too and most importantly, the exact brand and version of his PSU. It is a gaming PC, so I doubt he cheaped out on a PSU, but that's something you should always want information on because a shit PSU can be a time bomb waiting to kill your PC.

Me personally, I did not like the FX series CPUs, but then again, I only tried out CSGO, Black Ops 2 and a few other games where performance with a 960 STRIX was less than what I expected. I would honestly argue just trying to buy the GPU alone from him for a set price and then throwing a Ryzen build together with the rest of the budget, but that is just me personally. An FX 8350 will serve it's purpose, it's not complete shit, but a Ryzen 1300 X for about $25 more passes the FX 8350 in gaming benchmarks. Kind of a pity that a gaming PC is missing an SSD, but that's something you could always add down the line (preferably would do a fresh install and put the Windows OS on the SSD.) I would hold off on buying until you get more information on what I posted above.

Overall on appraisal, it's iffy to say simply because the GPU prices right now completely butcher the price it's worth. We could be looking at what it's worth before the GPU prices and with their price now, plus there is missing information on other hardware that stops from a more accurate price point.

Nope, no, no. Absolutely not. Not even close to woth $800. Worth a little over hald of that, at most.

Total: $790.34

$10 cheaper for brand new parts all round, as well as much much newer, much better CPU. The PSU is also even likely better quality as well. This would still not be a great build though IMO, because it's still missing an SSD.

A the absolute most, that FX-8350 system is worth $500, maybe $550 at a push.

The GPU is pretty respectable, and the case is decent but the rest is questionable. Also, the case is a Phanteks Eclipse, looks like a P400(S) TG, it's not a Thermaltake case. You can buy a new RX 580 for $280, so at most his RX 480 is worth $250.

CPU, Mobo, and RAM together are maybe worth $150, $175 depening on the motherboard. These are really holding the system back the most. Case, PSU, and HDD are worth maybe $125-150 depending on the specific PSU.
+$250 for 4GB RX 480
=$425-475.

You should still consider buying it, but only for the right price. Offer $475 for the whole system, $500 tops. Otherwise, try to get the PSU, case, GPU, and HDD(this is all you really want to use anyway) for $375, $400 maximum. Maybe $425 if it's a really good quality PSU. Before you buy anything, find out which specific PSU it is though, as it could be worth anywhere from $20-70.

If you get the whole system for $475-500, sell the FX-8XXX CPU, 16GB DDR3 RAM and motherboard for whatever you can get. Try for $150, don't take less than $100.

Or, you get the PSU, GPU, case, and HDD for $400, either way you are left with at least $400 to buy yourself a new CPU, Mobo, and RAM(assuming the $800 budget) which is more than enough for a decent R5/i5 set-up.

Thanks again, 13! I talked to him more and asked him for a fair price and I think he still wants to sell it for more money. I probably won't buy it from him because he still wants like $700 for it at the least. I just asked him about buying some of the individual parts, such as the PSU, case, and GPU. He hasn't replied with the brand of the PSU either.

He's being kind of flaky since I called him out. I think I'll probably just build my own PC.
