Our very first ancestor, was a rat-like creature. It was not necessarily what we identify as a rat now-a-days, however had similar characteristics as one.

This creature, then branched into various mammals. I'm not going to identify what, how, or why, but it did. One of the mammals, were humans. The others were gorillas, monkeys, chimpanzees, etc. This is why we are so closely related to them, and why our chromosomes closely resemble those of apes and prosimians.

So to simply answer the question, evolution is how humans came to be.
