Open up task manager and see if you're using all of your RAM. If you're using all of it, then yes, you'll see an improvement.

If you're still on a DDR2 platform, you've got more issues than just RAM to worry about. You might want to look at a used SSD if you're on a tight budget.

As Adam said, I'd think an actual socket upgrade would make more sense than just adding RAM. You'll notice a difference between 8GB and 16GB RAM for sure, unless you only use your system for basic stuff, even then, if you use Chrome you'll appreciate 16GB over 8GB lol.

Also, I thought you were looking to build a $400-500 PC? Why buy DDR2 RAM if you're going to be building a newer PC that will require DDR3, or even DDR4?

The budget would be better suited to around 500. An expensive rent to own would enable me to make payments rather than pay upfront.

My machine is old. It can support up to 16gb ram but only runs with 8. The end game is indeed to put together or buy a new machine, but adding the 8gb extra ram will only cost 20 bucks. I can do 20 bucks now. So why not get a boost if its available is what I'm going at. Not changing my mind on the end game.

I have been reading alot about ryzen systems in here. Getting a 2600x with a new asus board would put me right at where I want to be depending on the GPU I decide on and how much ram to initially put in it.

I'm leaning more to a build rather than an over the counter. Im sure the otc is great, but it would likely remove any ability to upgrade later which of course I will likely want to do eventually.
