Alright so this rant is from personal experience through my career and especially this past weekend.

Before reading, West Point military academy is the oldest military post in history and is the starting place of some of the most highest decorated officers in US military's history. It's acceptance rate is 10% and the very wealthy are from there and the surrounding area.

So I'm a military police officer and this weekend we were pulled to work a detail for the Army West Point VS OH game. As the game is on a military installation they need extra patrols and MPs to pull security. I was unfortunately tasked on this detail. The post was expecting 38,000 people with only 60 MPs to work.

I was first tasked with conducting RAMPS which is random vehicle searches for anti-terrorism measures.
We choose random vehicles to divert and to be searched. So here is where my rant begins.

About 10 or 15 vehicle searches in, I instructed a vehicle to divert to this lane to be searched. The guy and his wife are in a Bentley. He rolls his eyes and says "this is outrageous, are you aware of who I am?" I responded "No sir, i do not know who you are, please divert to the lane as instructed" He then diverted and flipped me off.

The next vehicle that came through was a LTC (Lieutenant-Colonel). I asked him to divert and he straight up said no. I told him he must divert or be denied access to the installation. He then diverted, shortly after taking the turn to divert. He stopped and got out and asked me why I did not salute him.(for those who do not know. Enlisted soldiers are required to salute officers and give the greeting of the date while outdoors). I informed him that while working as an MP under orders I have the authority of the commanding general and customs and courtesies are optional. He threatened me of course(wish I could have tased him)

Once we completed the searches I was tasked with a roving patrol on the tail gating field. While doing this we were stopped multiple times for photos and free food which was not bad but it's about community police as most of the people are civilians and rarely see military.
Those who are West Point graduates or from the area are different. While patrolling we observed under age drinking and other things against policy or NY state law. We instruct these people to stop, we get told to mind our business and that they "have rights." We experienced these things most of the day.

I worked 14 hours, from 0500 to 1900
In those 14 hours I was cursed at, belittled, threatened all by people who think they are entitled and unfortunately I have to stay professional and not break anyone's shins with my baton.

Rant over.

Ah the joys of being an MP. It's because a lot of people hate them. Would you want to be stopped from going somewhere you're going knowing you're not doing anything wrong? Of course the LTC was way out of line but still.

Orders are orders, and you don't need to like them to follow them. I feel like you couldn't have handled the situation better.

Yeah understandable but you also have to remember. You are on a military installation, you are subject to certain policies and procedures.

We just enforce the laws. Don't make them!

It was very clear of the job title or entitlement of position given, so yea you have the professionalism of the job to handle it clean and perfect! But the job description of given guidance of what or how to do it is basically your job to describe and I didn't find anything wrong with it, just the people who are arsed to do what they're told to.
