As for the question: I would look into a Phenom II X6 1090T BE @ 3.2GHz, if you're looking for future resistance. Soon, more and more applications will support multicore processing which means you'll be much more happy with the Phenom II X6 then the i5 that would be better now. The i5 is a great processor, especially if you're looking for sandy bridge but it sounds to me like you want to squeeze the most time out of your computer, so I'd recommend going for more cores; especially since you're on a budget.

With the news of the new Sandy Bridge Processors being recalled because of the bugs with all the chipsets on the motherboards, I don't know if I should wait for them to be available or not.

I have a budget of about $800 - $1000

What I want to know is if I should wait until April to get the new i5 2500K Sandy Bridge processor, or just buy the 1st gen i5 or i7.

Keep in mind that I want to build a Fast, High Performance Gaming PC.

Buy first gen i5 or i7 sandybridge had problems on realese not a good indactor for the future or if you willing to branch out try amd's phenom line.
