For example, what's the difference between the default_mp.ff and the default.xex or whatever they all are? And how many are there for mw2? It's 2 I think, please confirm. Sorry if it's a nooby question.

A patch is a "patch_mp.ff"
A patch determines what happens in the game. The patch_mp.ff determines what happens in the multiplayer, patch.ff determines what happens in the single player.
The default_mp.xex must be cracked to do multiplayer mods. The default.xex must be cracked to to single player mods.
And xex file is the Xbox 360's version of an exe file; it executes the game.
