Okay, history lesson time: The term 'sniper' (and, by derivative, the term 'sniper rifle') originated from early days of hunting, wherein those who could hit fast, small birds (usually the titular snipe) we considered extremely good marksmen.
Now, with this .22LR rifle snipes are just about the only thing you'll be able to kill- if you can even hit them.
