Hey all im looking for some help , i have a 63 plate so 2013 Volvo v40 D2 R-Design and i'm having issues with over heating , i have had the water pump changed and the timing belt also had new pulleys , ive done some research online and people are saying cracked head gaskets or cracked cylinders , im going to try are replace the thermostat tomorrow to see if that make any difference.

What happens is the car will run to normal temp if i try the heaters it just blows cold air.
then sometimes it will blow how air but thats when the car temp goes up and overheats.

just can't seem to find what is causing that , any help would be amazing before i go spending on it again.

Also the car has 98k on the clock its a 1.5 Diesel

If your heat gasket is cracked you'd probably start to see some oil leaking into the cooling system, if you open your oil filler cap and coolant tank and it looks normal (no sludge) then you're all good.

Since you are mentioning about no heat into the cabin I would also be thinking towards a thermostat. If the thermostat is stuck closed, this will mean that water will not circulate around the engine.

Does the engine get to operating temperature as normal?

no sludge or oil anywhere , the car does go to operating temperature but blows cold air , when hot air starts to come out that's when it overheats

I'd go with a thermostat then, but I'd test the old one before buying a new one. Just put it in water hot enough for it to open. Since you mention overheating, it would make sense for it to be closed already.
