So im put together a build and scored a motherboard, a cpu, and a 8gb ram stick for $50.

AMD FX-6300 6 core @ 3.5ghz
Team A 8gb DDR3 1600mhz
Asus M5A78L-M / USB 3

like was wondering if the cpu is worth keeping for now or upgrade to an FX-8370?

The parts you picked up for $50 is a good steal, yes upgrading to a FX-8370 would be a little better for power. But it's better to keep it the way it is and upgrade later on to DDR4 or DDR5.

I mean, if you had nothing to start with then sure, it's OK but I wouldn't recommend staying with it for long if you're planning to do any type of gaming. That FX range is getting a tad old and you no longer have any upgradeable routes to take since you're on AM3 and AMD's latest is on AM4.

So, if you have nothing but these parts for the moment, I'd consider finishing it then later on down the line sort of ASAP, change them out so you can make use of any GPU that'll you'll be putting in your system.

I wouldn't say it's a steal, but it is a good price for what you get. That said, you're really not getting much lol. I definitely wouldn't bother swapping in an FX-8370, just use the FX-6300 until you can actually upgrade to something more substantial.

If you're just trying to get in to PC's on the cheap, then you're on the right track to be fair. Should easily be able to find a decent case and PSU for $60-75, especially used. Then add whatever GPU you can afford, and deal with storage and you could potentially have a nice little 1080p gaming system for under $250, maybe even $200.

How much did you get the 290x for? Bit old now, but still a great GPU to be fair. They can get pretty hot though, especially the reference coolers. They also use a lot of power, so you'll need a decent PSU for that thing.

But yeah, stick a decent PSU and storage in there, and you've got yourself a decent system for 1080p 60Hz gaming, or maybe a bit of 1440p potentially.

Depending on the capacity and amount of DIMMs, you might actually be better off losing some of the RAM. Is it a 1x8GB DIMM, and 3x4GB DIMMs you've got, or what?

290x from a buddy is not bad, so yeah decent little cheap system there.

It'll be fine, but you'd be better swapping the 8GB DIMM for another 4GB and running 4x4GB tbh.

Again, just make sure to get a decent PSU- oh, and an SSD.
