Recently, I have been looking into jumping back into the PC gaming world. A lot has changed considering that the last time I built a PC was back in 2013 and only ended up using the device for roughly 2 years.

I have noticed that there has been a lot of debate between whether to use 4k 60hz vs 1440p 144hz when it comes to gaming. I'm aware that 4k will give a more "crisp" image whereas the higher refresh rate will give a more fluid responsive feel.

Personally, I am an individual who mostly plays RPG, RTS, and Simulation style games. I rarely ever touch First person shooter such as call of duty and battlefield.(I would use my console for such games)/

Anyways, in the upcoming months I will be coming off active duty orders. When the summer of 2020 comes, I will be looking at building a New gaming PC before the start of college. This PC that I build will not only be used for gaming but writing code.(Finish my last year of my BS degree in CS). I'm curious about any opinions, based on my usage, whether I should build a PC geared toward 4k or 1440? I know this build is long way out but rather start thinking about it now.

Thanks !

For those who are keen FPS gamers or racers, the higher refresh-rate is far more important than the higher resolution, too, as it makes fast-paced aiming and firing much more manageable. The loss of detail won't hurt your gaming performance, whereas 144Hz vs 60Hz does bring tangible performance improvements. I would go with 1440p 144hz refresh over 4k 60hz, yes you will have less textures but the smoothness in the game is worth it. You can upgrade if you care about how the game looks rather than how smooth the gameplay is.

The thing is I am not a keen FPS gamer or racer, however, I'm assuming in your last sentence you mean that the hardware requirement to do either are the same. Therefore, if I don't like one I could potentially sell the monitor and just buy the more preferred monitor.

The requirements are not the same your system will take a beating on 4k resolution, you can tone done the settings of course, but for you a higher refresh rate monitor is the best option. Especially if you play RPG i would buy a 144hz refresh rate and do upgrades at a later date if that is what you want. I play some RPG games and i will say i would rather have a smooth gameplay than better graphics.
