"Which would make sense given a generational leap as significant as Sony is currently touting" seems to indicate the price hike is is warranted due to such a step up in spec's however I'd more put it down to general inflation and the price you'd expect to pay nowadays. The PS4 launched for $399 / £350 in 2013, £100/$100 increase.

This price seems most realistic for me maybe £599 at very most

Online is only free for certain games? Otherwise you need PlayStation plus?
You need PS+ for paid games but free games like Warzone,apex,fortnite destiny 2 etc you dont need PS+
