Hey all, I'm very new to the PC building scene and would be ecstatic and super appreciative of some quick tips and pointers as I'm currently undertaking my very first PC build. I've spent about a whole day now researching everything I can possibly learn about PC building but am far from understanding much at all

My chosen site for building my PC is [Minimum post requirement for links] and have been working hard on this build [Minimum post requirement for links]

The PC will be used for editing RAW photos in Adobe Photoshop, and some light casual gaming here and there, budget is not strict but I was intending on a budget/casual/modest build without cheaping out on too much.

Thank you so much for all your help!!

Hey Camo, I would recommend using this build and I also changed the monitor to an IPS 27' monitor since you're going to be using the PC for editing RAW photos in Photoshop. If you have any questions regarding why I chose the parts I chose let me know.

Thanks for the build Arctism, very much appreciated! I built up that build in pcpartspicker and had a look over the differences between it and my build. I am fairly set on the CPU and GPU unless you have some some information I'm unaware of, but have made changes to the ram (I ordered the Corsair RGB's from a steal price then they emailed me saying the price was incorrect and my order would be cancelled with a full refund) so i went with very popular G.Skill Ripjaws. For the storage i decided on the Crucial P1 you recommended in your build. Correct me if I'm wrong but you are suggesting the NZXT H510 ATX Mid Tower Case for the power shroud inside the case, For this reason I've chosen a case a little more to my budget but including a power shroud, the Phanteks P300 has very good reviews and is a little cheaper than the NZXT you have shown above. And last but not least that Acer VG270 Pbiip looks absolutely amazing!!!! I so wish i could get it but I cant find a price for it maybe it is an older model not being sold anymore? I used parametric selection to select that Acer as well as the AOC I had originally and another budget IPS with lower hertz, leaning more towards to IPS monitor.

A few things I'm still unsure about:
Power Supply
CPU Cooler
Motherboard
Will everything fit together??

Here's the updated build: (in AUD click link to get easy currency conversion)

Any advice and tips would be hugely appreciated! Thankyou!

Requesting a list of parts

If you don't answer these questions, we will post them or refer you back to this post.

  • What is your budget and currency? I'm assuming you're Australian, so what is your budget in AUD, not USD?
  • What will you use the PC for exactly?
  • Do you need a monitor? If not, what monitor(s) will you be using?
  • Do you need a keyboard, mouse, or other peripherals?
  • Do you need an operating system?
  • Will you overclock?
  • Anything else we should know?

I would change pretty much the entire system, but I can't actually make any recommendations without all of the information above.

Camo129 wrote I am fairly set on the CPU

Why? It's a poor purchase. If you're going to just pay the premium for an Intel CPU, buy 10th gen. Also, the unlocked 9600k is wasted on a B365 chipset motherboard which doesn't allow overclocking anyway.
If you're really set on Intel, either buy an i5-10400(F) and a B460 chipset motherboard, or an i5-10600K(F) and a Z490 motherboard. Ryzen 5 3600 is undoubtedly the better choice though.

Camo129 wrote the Phanteks P300

The P300A should be around the same price anyway, so I'd get that instead if possible. Otherwise, the P400A might only be slightly more expensive so could be a good alternative. I wouldn't personally get an NZXT H510.

Hey thanks for the reply I answered a lot of questions up here already.

What is your budget and currency? Just a budget build capable of Photoshop and light gaming $1500 AUD
What will you use the PC for exactly? Photoshop and light gaming
Do you need a monitor? yes discussed above preferably an IPS above 24" while still being capable for recent games..
Do you need a keyboard, mouse, or other peripherals? will just use whatever is around at home already
Do you need an operating system? no have windows OS already
Will you overclock? I don't believe it will be necessary for the purpose so was not planning on it.
Anything else we should know? Its my first build...

When you say you would change the entire system what do you mean by this?

Yes I'm not racist but I would prefer Intel. According to my research on User Benchmark the i5 9600k is the best value for money intel CPU which I thought would be capable for its intended purpose. The chipset not allowing for overclocking I didn't see as a problem, do you think it must be overclocked? I chose the motherboard because it was cheap. I know not the best idea but I'm a bit clueless about motherboards.

Iv changed the case once again though as I wasn't able to find the p300 in Australia, which then forced me to change fan and power supply with the new case. Is a power supply shroud necessary? They bump up the price a bit much where as the case I settled on is a good price has many good reviews on amazon as well as looking very nice!!

3rd Update: [Minimum post requirement for links]
I removed the Monitor from this one as I will just purchase that separate.
I chose non-modular to save on money a bit.

Camo129 wrote When you say you would change the entire system what do you mean by this?

I would change all of the parts you initially picked.

Camo129 wrote According to my research on User Benchmark the i5 9600k is the best value for money intel CPU which I thought would be capable for its intended purpose.

Ignore User Benchmark. For just "photoshop and light gaming", you could easily get away with an R3 3100.

Camo129 wrote The chipset not allowing for overclocking I didn't see as a problem, do you think it must be overclocked?

Why spend the extra on an unlocked CPU if you can't overclock it anyway? It's just wasted money. Buy a locked SKU which will come with a stock cooler as well, and save you money.

Camo129 wrote Iv changed the case once again though as I wasn't able to find the p300 in Australia

The P300 and P300A are both available in Aus. The P300A should be $95, which is a much better buy than the SPEC-05. Like I said though, P400A shouldn't be much more expensive and if you can manage the extra $10-15, the P400A is worth it.

That PSU is terrible. The CX450M is probably the cheapest PSU you want to be buying.

So, here;
PCPartPicker Part List

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600 3.4 GHz 6-Core Processor ($219.00 @ Amazon Australia)
Motherboard: MSI B450 TOMAHAWK MAX ATX AM4 Motherboard ($199.00 @ PC Byte)
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws V 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3600 CL18 Memory ($100.10 @ Newegg Australia)
Storage: Crucial P1 1 TB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive ($155.00 @ PC Byte)
Video Card: GALAX GeForce GTX 1650 SUPER 4 GB EX (1-click OC) Video Card ($239.00 @ Centre Com)
Case: Phanteks Eclipse P400A ATX Mid Tower Case ($111.10 @ Newegg Australia)
Power Supply: Cooler Master MWE Gold 550 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply ($128.40 @ Device Deal)
Monitor: AOC C24G1 24.0" 1920x1080 144 Hz Monitor ($239.00 @ PC Byte)
Total: $1390.60

Then use the remainder of your $1500 budget to either up the R5 2600 to an R5 3600, or up the GTX 1650 Super to a GTX 1660 (Super).

If you really want Intel instead then like I said, buy an i5-10400(F) and a B460 chipset motherboard. Ryzen is undoubtedly a better option though.

What? I don't understand what you mean?

The entire parts list I linked is available to purchase in Australia. Looks like mostly Amazon, Newegg, PCByte, and PC CaseGear are your best options to buy from for the best prices.

Click on the part in the parts list and it'll give you links to multiple merchants that sell the item.

Ok thanks, I was assuming that those merchants were all out of stock that's why it doesn't show a price... Otherwise i don't understand why it doesn't show a cost, it means i cant see the total and whether its within budget.

Are you seeing something different than that? Weird. I think you probably have Amazon checked as your only merchant on PCPP. Set it to all, like this;
