Hello all,
Do you think going to a university is worth it? Why or why not? My answer to this is for most things absolutely not. With the plethora of online learning tools free or paid it's just not worth it. I am in the last year of my computer science degree and I could have taught it all to myself in a fraction of the time for a fraction of the cost. I don't even have much debt as I have been paying as I went. If I could do it over again I wouldn't have attended college. |

I have the same opinion as you after finishing university myself last summer.
Unfortunately you're paying basically for a name on a bit of paper to prove you have the skills:( I think it'd be more worth it if you 100% know exactly what job you're looking to go into, which i did not lol. |

I took business in university and then ended up getting a great job and never using it. You can make a lot of money and teach yourself without it for sure, however it's 100% necessary for careers in the medical field I think. Nobody wants a hack job doctor / surgeon. Lol |

I took Journalism, I wouldn't say it was worth it, I didn't go into journalism as field as the industry kind of started drying up as I graduated due to the fall in ad revenue online journalism was pulling meant hiring was less frequent.
In my experience people who leave school and go straight into a trade seem to do better off career and financial wise earlier in life, and learn as they go. Obviously this is on a case by case basis depending on what you're studying, the saturation of graduates in that field and the market demand for graduates. |

All depends on what you're going for in my opinion. I'm an artist. I took 3 years off after graduating highschool and made the decision to go back. Here I am in my final year top of my class with a ton of opportunities. For me it's been connecting. Not so much the classes and shit. If you work your ass off you can come out with no debt or little to no debt. Idc what anyone says. I'm proof. And going to school to be an artist is border line pointless, it's just about the connections and freedom to really focus on your craft for 4+ years. When I took those 3 years off, I was working dead end job after dead end job 50+ hours a week with no time to work on my passions. Good money. Had everything materialistically that I wanted. But wasn't happy
Anything legal or medical you should need a degree. Most everything else not really unless you are 100% certain in what you want to do and you just want time to iron shit out sooner and meet better/more connections |

Speaking from US perspective,
College can be very useful but I think it's important that you have a clear goal or idea of what you want to do before going into it. Simply signing up and paying out $10-25k+ a year through loans or savings without knowing what you even want to do is almost a surefire way to burn out and/or waste money. Plenty of people switch career paths halfway through school, and you don't have to know an exact job you want, but having an idea of your interests and aspirations is helpful. If you aren't completely sure of what you want to do, it's best to put it off or take some credits at a local community college, which typically charge $50-100 per credit hour, versus the $300+ charged per credit at most 4 year state schools ($1000+ at some private ones). Of course there are also some jobs you simply need to attend school for, if you're wanting to work in the medical field, engineering, finance (at a firm/fund, or Accounting type gigs), law, you will need some form of formal education and licensing. Also fair or not, some jobs simply do require a 4 year degree even if it's not very relevant. |

I believe it all depends on what you want to do in life. You cannot become an attorney if you don't get your degree. |
