Always something I've wondered, do you pay for the features with better boards, the looks, the brand...?

I'm looking at treating myself with a new PC and the amount of boards out there for chipsets is mad.

Does the rule "you pay for what you get for" apply to motherboards?

For me I just get one that has all of the ports etc that I need. Stuff like RGB and brand definitely do impact the price however there are many great deals on motherboards and they all serve the same purpose. I feel like as long as they have all of the required ports ams have the latest tech in them, they are good enough although from there you could compare to other motherboards with the same specs to see what is cheapest etc.

Motherboards. Egh. A whole lot of marketing pushes prices up with silly things like RGB and what not.

Things to look for in a motherboard
Rear IO ports - Does it serve what you want
Internal ports - Speaking like fan headers and such
Physical connectors - Think M.2 slots
Chipset - Does the chipset have what you want IE if Intel, does it allow for overclocking

These days, you'd be better off going with 1 below the top end of the chipset. So for AMD that's B550 & for Intel, that's B560 [I think]

Reason being is that you don't get a whole lot more for your money when you go top end, well not anymore. There used to be issues with power phases and overclocking limitations, but really mid spec should do the daily user just fine. Can't speak for Intel and overclocking though. I've lost track on what on earth they're allowing and not allowing these days.

Most mid end motherboards come with enough IO ports to satisfy most needs to. It's not like SLI / Crossfire is a thing anymore either.
