long story short, im looking to take guitar lessons and want to know a decent guitar to buy for ideally less than $150 but am willing to step into the $200 range

Well, the cheaper the guitar the more you're going to compromise on sound, but for beginners Yamaha is perfect.. I know it is out of the price range that you mentioned, but the Taylor Baby series is one of the best guitars for beginners. That's what I started out with and still use it to this day.

I started with a Yamaha. Still have it and play it today.

Are you getting an electric or acoustic? Obviously you'd have to factor in cables, pics, an amp, etc. depending on what you're looking for.

There are many good beginner brands. A lot of the time you can get a good deal on one used locally. A lot of the big name brands have a side brand geared towards beginners, with a lower price tag. For example, Fender has Squier, Gibson has Ephiphone, etc.

My first guitar was an Ibanez that cost me $150, which works fine to this day.

IMO most of the well known brands will work fine for a beginner. You can probably find something in your price range from a good chunk of these well known brands.
