So hes 7yrs old ive bought one of those cheap Dell OptiPlex 390's

the motherboard is SFF F6X5P DIH61R Socket LGA 1155 H61

Just wondering what CPU's are compatible with this and what my best option is for this it currently has
I3 2120.

Edit: It came with 8gb ram 2x 4gb am i better sticking with that or getting one single 8gb stick?

It'll be a proprietary Dell motherboard inside a proprietary case, with a proprietary PSU. Upgrading systems like this can be a nightmare, and sometimes more hassle than it's worth.

I can't see any spec sheet or manual for your specific motherboard, but I can't imagine an i5 or i7 wouldn't be supported. So I'd try to find a cheap Sandy Bridge i5(like i5-2400) or i7(i7-2600) and slot that in.
Then I would probably want to add more RAM, but you'll only have 2 DIMM slots and the motherboard might not even support more than 8GB RAM.

After that, your only real upgrade option is GPU and that's going to be limited, something like a GTX 1050Ti is probably your best bet that will be compatible. Otherwise you'll need to upgrade the case, motherboard, and PSU.
