Hi,
I have been researching monitors for my kids. I understand the difference between 1080p and 1440p and how you need more a more powerful gpu to handle the 1440p. I also understand refresh rates and response rates, etc, so I don't advice about those areas. My kids have been playing Valorant most lately, but also play minecraft, Civ 6, Space Engineers, so a mix of fast and slow games. My questions are: 1) If I bought a 1440p monitor can you run games on lower settings or something so I don't have issues with the gpu handling it (3060 gpu), but allow me to future proof when I upgrade the PC later, or should I just be sticking to a 1080p? 2) There seems to be a lot of debate on the internet about whether or not 27" is any good at 1080p. The far majority of gaming monitors that seem to be available are 27" 1080p, so surely they can't be that bad if that many people are buying them? I've just upgraded my kids' setups and the monitors are the last things to do, but I'm getting analysis paralysis, because I don't want to get a 27" 1080p if it's going to be no good, but I would like to get a 27" for the size, but if 24" is going to be better, than maybe the sacrifice is the size. Thanks |

Hey!
I had this debate with myself as well. I upgraded to a 3080 and R9 5900x so I felt 1440p was the way to go. 1440p has been great for me in terms of playing CS, Valorant and the new MWII. However, Fortnite (if I play on the odd occasion) does NOT handle 1440p very well whatsoever. I change to 1920x1080 res and it works a treat. All in all, my games look fantastic on 1440p and if you notice issues, it can be dropped if the game is quite demanding etc I'm running the 27" 240hz Samsung Odyssey and I LOVE it. |

Ok, so you can drop the res to 1080p if needed? Does that do anything strange to the visuals, or does it just treat it as if it were a 1080p monitor? If so, that would be a good compromise, being able to switch between the two as required depending on the game. |

1 - Yes, you can most certainly drop the resolution of the game to boost FPS.
2 - There's loads of guides on the internet regarding viewing distance vs resolution. I found one here should you want to read. Guide. 27" is fine for 1080P gaming. You can ofc go down to 24" but... more = better right I'll throw in my option; it depends if you want the hassle or not. For example, if your kids are savvy enough to notice dropping frames / performance and to know to turn the settings down, then you'll be fine for 1440p. If not, you'll be disturbed every 5 minutes to come and help. Easy life = 1080p. |

1080p resolution is not suitable for monitors over 24". You can see individual pixels at normal distance and text looks terrible. They're cheap because they suck. Anecdotally, they cause eye strain.
I suggest 27" as max size for 1440p. About 110 PPI is the minimum I recommend. |
