Buying a car hopefully.. off a private seller. I've always bought off dealerships so going to be fun!

Anybody bought from private sellers and the cars gone wrong weeks later?

My dad brought a car from a private seller awhile back and still uses it, and it's never had any problems

When I bought my car the check engine light came on after a week.
Cat converter, another $900. That was the only problem for a long time.
In the long run, it was worth it. 10 year warranty and I've had to replace it "twice" since.

£750 car, still running perfect 10,000 miles later.

I would say yes, but the responsibility of checking the car over is now fully on your shoulders. I'd recommend checking a used car checklist, whether your american or british, ChrisFix makes a good check list. You must be thorough when inspecting. If the car is parked in a place which makes it hard to inspect, ask him to move it. Start from the driver seat and check everything inside (literally everything).

On the outside you need to work your way around, checking what functions and what doesn't. Test drive with the radio off, pay attention to weird noises. Test the brakes, clutch and gears.

If the seller doesn't have any paperwork, or the details don't match up (such as the vehicles mileage compared to its last inspection) you should probably walk away.

It's also good to know what to expect from a car of a particular age and mileage. For example, if the car is about to tick over 100,000 miles. You should be paying close attention to the suspension, mainly the bushes. A common tell tale is that you'll hear knocking/banging noises over bumps. Lastly, always find out about the cam belt or chain!! if they break, you can bet your ass those valves are going to go banana shaped.

See inspection sheet HERE

Always get an inspection when dealing with private or dealership.

I bought most of my vehicles private party without issue. My current truck I bought back in October for $22,800, put 8k miles on it and it blew up the other day. It doesn't matter who sells the vehicle to you, a vehicle is a vehicle.

I prefer buying private party for the maintenance records and you can kinda feel them out to see if they are a good person who would tell the truth or not.

Only ever bought 1 car private. Was a 17 plate S3, had it for about a year and never had a single issue.
