Hi everyone!
Today, I thought it would be fun to share my gas mask collection with you. While it's not a massive collection, I'd love to show you some photos and share a bit of information about the masks I currently have. This might end up being a bit of a long post, so if you're not in the mood for a detailed read, feel free to just browse the pictures and let me know which mask is your favorite or the one you think looks the coolest!

If you have gas masks, please feel free to share them here in this topic!

Let's start with the:

GP-4u

The Soviet GP-4u (Civilian Gas Mask-4) gas mask was developed for civilian use in response to the escalating fears of the Cold War. Produced from 1953 to 1974, it was designed to address the growing concern over potential chemical, biological, or radioactive threats. Constructed from durable rubber, the GP-4U provided full-face coverage, effectively shielding the eyes, nose, and mouth. Its flexible and robust design made it well-suited for emergency situations, offering practical protection for non-combatants.

The filter for the GP-4u is known to contain asbestos specifically in the particulate filtration layers. Asbestos was commonly used in Cold War-era gas mask filters because of its excellent heat resistance and filtering properties.

In the video game series S.T.A.L.K.E.R. a mutated creature called a Snork can be seen wearing a gas mask mostly based on the GP-4.

GP-5

The GP-5 is a gas mask kit, manufactured from 1962 to 1990 by the Soviet Union, issued and stored for civil defense usage, it was designed to protect civilians of the Soviet Union from radioactive fallout during the Cold War. This mask is a helmet-type mask which was made in white or black rubber.
The gas mask, being of the "helmet" type, requires it to have strong elasticity, and must be stretched over the head for it to be worn. This allows for a secure fit, while trading comfort. The mask itself is made of latex rubber, and thus it naturally adheres well to the skin which ensures an airtight seal.
The GP-5 kit included a 40mm GOST filter, lab reports from the Netherlands and Finland have confirmed the presence of asbestos in the GP-5 filter, in both the particulate filter, and the activated carbon, in filters produced up to at least 1988.

GP-7

The GP-7 gas mask is a civilian gas mask that was produced by the Soviet Union during the Cold War era. The mask was designed to provide protection to civilians against nuclear, biological, and chemical agents during the threat of the Cold War.
The GP-7 is made from a black rubbery material that was intended to be both durable and flexible. It has two circular eyepieces that provide a wide field of vision and allow the wearer to easily see in any direction. The mask also features a voice diaphragm for clear communication.
Due to the harness being made of rubber, it is uncomfortable and painful for those with longer hair to take it on and off. When the mask is on, however, it sits comfortably on the face.
The GP-7 gas mask uses a GOST 40mm filter thread, the filter can be attached on the users left side of the mask and provides protection against a wide range of NBC agents, including chemical warfare agents like Sarin and mustard gas, as well as biological agents like anthrax and smallpox
The filter of the GP-7 hasn't been tested for asbestos, therefore wearing the filter is risky.

Danish M/45

The Danish M/45 gas mask (also known as M45 or M/45 Respirator) is a gas mask that was developed and used by the Danish Armed Forces primarily in the 1940s to 1950s.
It is a distinctive mask due to its design and was primarily issued to military personnel to protect against chemical, biological, and radiological threats.
The facepiece is made of a rubberized material that is flexible and designed to create a tight seal around the face. The mask was designed to provide a secure fit and protection from harmful agents.
The mask features two round eye lenses that provide a wide field of vision, which are made of glass. These lenses offer protection from chemicals and gases but still allow good visibility, the lenses are typically equipped with a scratch-resistant coating to improve durability.
It was primarily intended for military use in situations involving chemical warfare.
The M45 uses a side-mounted 60mm thread filter canister, which is attached to the left side of the mask, it is designed to protect the wearer from a range of chemical agents, including nerve agents, blister agents, and radioactive particles.
The original filters for the Danish M/45 gas mask are likely to be dangerous due to the presence of asbestos and other hazardous materials.

Yugoslavian MC-1

The MC-1 gas mask was issued to all military personnel and civilians from the late 1960s to late 1995. The mask was used during the entirety of the Yugoslav wars. This mask was intended to protect wearers from chemical, biological, and radiological threats.
This mask uses a 60mm thread for the filter. The mask was produced in two models: the M-1, and the MC-1. The only known difference between the two is that the MC-1 lacks the oral-nasal cup.
The mask is made of a light greenish rubber which creates a secure seal against the wearer's face, the filter is the same color as the lens rims.
The filters originally issued with the MC-1 are unsafe for use due to the likely presence of asbestos.
The mask was widely distributed and remains a common surplus item, making it popular among collectors.

Thats sick! Thanks for sharing. Do you have any interest in the modern market? I have some family who work with SAU and have access to some pretty neat modern masks.

If someone showed up on my doorstep with the GP-4U, I'm calling the cops no questions asked.

I'm fascinated by all kinds of gas masks, but the older ones are definitely my favorites, they have such a distinctively creepy vibe, especially with those circular eye lenses. The GP-4u really stands out, though, with its striking green color and big hose. Just be careful with that big coffee can filter, it's not exactly ideal unless you're in the mood to inhale some lovely asbestos!

Thank you so much for showing interest in this! I honestly didn't expect anyone on this site to enjoy it, so it means a lot!

Not quite ready, these old filters are pretty much unreliable, having been expired for years and offering little to no protection against airborne threats. Wearing a gas mask without a proper filter is essentially useless. To make things worse, some of these filters contain asbestos. During the wars, asbestos was a popular choice for gas mask filters due to its effectiveness, but people back then had no idea of the severe health risks associated with inhaling it.
