From a local friend:

Somebody has finally put what I have been saying all season into a post! Guys, I've done Pediatrics for 8 years! Every single flu season it's the same symptoms and the same results! I can usually tell you by assessing a child which strain of flu they'll have before the test comes back! This year was different! The flu tests were coming back negative, but these kids were sick! They were being diagnosed with pneumonia via chest x-ray. The fevers wouldn't break and they couldn't stop coughing! We had several kids miss 2-3 weeks of school! We had some kids miss almost an entire month! I was one of those with a reoccurring fever! I had the worst respiratory symptoms I've ever had! I simply couldn't breathe! I don't smoke. I'm active! I'm healthy! There was no reason I shouldn't have been able to kick whatever it was like I always have! My employees had the same symptoms! Even had pneumonia! I'm certain we're late to the game! I would be inclined to send a few samples off for a serologic test when it comes out! This test is different from the ones used to diagnose active infection. Essentially the serologic test would allow researchers to test the blood of people who were not confirmed cases of Covid-19 in communities where the virus spread. They tests would be designed to look for signs that people have mounted an immune response after being exposed to the virus.

Remember a month or so ago when people were complaining about being sick and couldn't get rid of it for weeks?

Let's do some critical thinking. COVID-19 started emerging in early December. Given the incubation period, that means infection started in November, and given international travel and tourism rates, it DID NOT TAKE 3+ months for it to come here. It's been here.

I've had numerous friends across the country who've had crazy bad colds in the last few months, that we now believe were actually Coronavirus. US authorities only just started testing for it, and even now the testing is severely limited, so in all likelihood, many have had or do have it, and it's gotten passed off as just a typical cold - because (AHEM, NEWSFLASH) it IS just a bad cold for the vast majority of people who get it.

The normal colds and flu that we've already been dealing with kill thousands every season - it just doesn't get talked about because it's nothing new and the media can't use it to panic us at this point. It's sad but expected that elderly and immunocompromised people are prone to complications from those viruses. This is no different.

Wash your hands, eat your vegetables, don't touch any old people (for their safety) and calm the heck down. Panic is what's going to crash the market. Panic is what's going to empty stores. Panic is what's going to lead to serious economic impacts from this - YOU are causing economic impacts - not the virus. So please, let's act like we have some damn sense!

I'm all for a good conspiracy theory but the world has too many good scientists and epidemiologists it would've been picked up. The normal Flu changes each year and some years can be harder than others.

What upsets me is the world got complacent with the numbers China put out and in some respect that is still the case. Covid may not be as deadly as Ebola but Covid spreads around without anyone knowing it will kill people with underline issues but it will kill many many more due to health care systems falling over.

An example is the UK health care system (NHS) today coming out saying they only have 5000 ventilators to serve 65 Million people.

theguardian.com/politics/2020/mar...entilators

If 1% of the UK population gets it we will have 660,000 cases. At current 14% of cases turn serious, severe or extreme these cases will need ventilators that would mean 92,400 ventilators would be needed.

This is just if 1% of the population become infected.... the UK is playing a really dangerous game.

The danger to everyone is healthcare shortages and them becoming overwhelmed and that is what has happened in Italy

Italy is forcing doctors to choose which coronavirus patients to save
businessinsider.com/italys-doctor...S&IR=T

Everywhere needs to quarantine to stop health care systems cracking.

Good video that explains the UK's risky quarantine strategy

The problem?

The idea is good but there is a 2 week lag between hitting the quarantine button and more cases flooding the healthcare system. if done too late it will flood it anyway.

And all of this still banks on a less than 1% infection rate

My city (Indianapolis) is going on pseudo-lockdown today. Bars/Restaurants/Movie theaters are shut down, retail businesses are probably soon to follow. Only Grocery/Pharmacy will be open.

I'm not too worried about bubonic plague v2 coming from this, in the end I do believe it will be contained or minimized until (if) a vaccine becomes available in 9 months+. I do think it will expose major flaws in the US healthcare system. Expecting UBI and Major Healthcare reform to be the biggest debates going into future elections and onward.

More worried about global economic fallout that is going to happen as a result. We're already seeing the early result of mass panic, and it's not looking good. Airlines in the US are almost 100% going to be given some sort of government assistance, alternative is a literal halt to global travel economy and millions more losing jobs/homes/etc.

Almost every blue collar job in my area has been shut down for the next 4-6 weeks, without any contingency plan for how these people will pay bills and provide for their families in the mean time. Some in Congress have thrown around the idea of $1000 Basic income relief, Tax credits, PTO, etc, but I really don't have any faith in the clowns in our government to come together and put together a decent deal in time for it to have any effect. I understand the need for shutdown, but I can't understand why the governments are flipping the switch on this without already having a plan in place for how the hell these people are supposed to make ends meet in the meantime. Most americans are paycheck to paycheck and you can't just expect people to sit tight for two months without income. This recession isn't being caused by some underlying financial greed like 2008, it's a result of mass panic and investors losing faith in the markets/government, and most businesses simply not having a contingency for something like this, so I think we'll be in a better position to rebound as opposed to 2008, but I think it's going to get uglier before it gets much better. Hope all of us come out of this okay.

My friend works in a factory and last week (before they were mandated to shut down by local government) the factory owners spoke to them and said they would not be shutting down or offering time off to workers because the virus is a "liberal hoax being pushed by the media to get trump out of office"

Same factory got shut down for two months last year because of ransomware so I'm assuming this was just a cop out to save them from losing even more money, but jesus christ it's like an SNL skit.

Food stores around me are just basically empty. I can't get a decent amount of my groceries because there's just nothing in stores.
