I always wanted to know about box office data in the United States for films released before the information that Box Office Mojo has. But there was no weekend box office before 1982. Only weekly Variety gross reports were available. But in that magazine, you can get box office records all the way back to March of 1922. This helped me to determine that the silent films The Monster and then The Phantom of the Opera became the first horror movies to ascend to the top of the box office, during 1925.
So using that info, I managed to get every film released from 1922 to 2022 that reached number-one, except for the new Scream movie, as that's not out yet on DVD, etc. But man, is it an expensive hobby? I really think I achieved something good, though. But I will very sadly be quitting the hobby of buying top ten films this year, as I feel that it's not something I can ever really complete, as it will go on until the end of time itself. So I will stick to the chart toppers until 2025. Also, Amazon charges ridiculous prices for one Blu-ray, if it's hard to find. So that's another reason I think it's time to say goodbye to the hobby that has been so good to me... |
