Looking to see what deals or even equipment people recommend for coding/dev work, dual screens, built in webcam/mic...

So where I work, the devs just have fairly basic laptops. Nothing special. The only real requirement that I'd say is a must is having over 16GB of RAM, ideally 32GB. That'll give you a lot of flexibility.
From there, it's all down to preference and budget. I, although not a dev, work on a Dell precision as my daily and it's the best laptop I've had my hands on hands down, even beating their own XPS range. The only worry that I can think of for you is that you'd need the battery life which, because it has the dedicated mental GPU, that might not be a good idea so the XPS range is worth looking at. For the most part, most if not all laptops now have fairly good webcams, mics. All can multi screen (assuming you're willing to carry a type c dongle everywhere) So the question comes down to how much are you willing to spend on build quality, bigger battery and more specs. Edit - Glad r00t covered the Apple side. I've used them but not extensively. Wouldn't have the slightest idea on what they're like to work on. |

Depends what kind of dev work you are going to be doing really. I'd certainly recommend at least 16GB of RAM if you opt for the macbook approach as suggested by r00t.
If you're comfortable with macOS, a macbook is really the best option for simplicity's sake. As it's for college, I wouldn't really recommend the desktop as then you would have to be messing around constantly transferring data between home PC / college PC to continue your work. I think it would be very sensible to get a second display, it's pretty much a necessity imo; I have three and often times find myself wanting four. |

appreciate you guys, i dont know my way around mac yet, i feel in the end, ill probably end up that way but during college times, i stick to a windows laptop, so im not learning new things on both
thanks for the feedback, i figure some wizards were still around here! do you guys have a recommendation on screens/display? |

Yeah, certainly not worth the extra hassle learning how to use a mac when a windows machine is also just as capable.
In terms of what display to get - it depends a bit on your laptop screen. It's 100% worth getting an additional display but there's a bunch of different options you could choose; you could buy a 24" monitor and use your laptop screen simultaneously. You could plug your laptop into an ultrawide monitor and just use that as your main display - it's up to you really. For what it's worth, when I was doing my uni course I initially started with a desktop and 2 24" monitors. I eventually bought a nice 27" 144Hz monitor and used the 24" monitors on the side. (For gaming not just dev work) Nowadays (working from home) I'm on a 34" 165Hz ultrawide with the same 24" monitors on the side (these babies have served me well) Pretty much any monitor with decent reviews will do you well, if you need some specific suggestions then let us know. |
