Hi All,
Looking to build a mid/budget, primarily VR machine, with some 2d gameplay as well. VR vast majority of time will be in sim racing/driving. Coming from Rift S, RTX 3070, ryzen 7 1700x 16gb in a prebuilt dell 5675. This did surprising well, but cpu seems fried, always near 100% gaming and gets random crashes. Single fan case but never got any high gpu or cpu temps. Cant update dell mobo bios so cpu upgrade is out. Considering these parts during Black Friday, and welcome any feedback or suggestions. Aside from budget, VR clarity and performance is the top priority . Not opposed to overclocking and realize a better gpu is probably needed a year or so from now. Will now use Meta Quest 3. Will pull 750watt psu and rtx 3070 from current rig. Thanks in advance for all your help! Cheers! AMD Ryzen 5 7600 6-Core $180 [Minimum post requirement for links] Or AMD Ryzen 7 7700 8-Core, $260 [Minimum post requirement for links] MSI PRO A620M-E ProSeries Motherboard $70 [Minimum post requirement for links] CORSAIR VENGEANCE DDR5 RAM 32GB (2x16GB) 5600MHz $80 [Minimum post requirement for links] Montech AIR 903 MAX, E-ATX Mid Tower Case $65 [Minimum post requirement for links] |

I'm still running a 1700x, definitely a good idea to upgrade from that. Still a brilliant CPU but it's aged these days for sure lol. Since you're going to be upgrading motherboard anyway, I would definitely just recommend going AM5 now, so a Ryzen 7000 or 9000 generation CPU. If you can manage any of the x3D CPU's, do that, otherwise whatever you can afford will do the job, so an R5 7600 would be fine.
Your choice of RAM is fine, however 5600MHz is the bare minimum I'd aim for. 6000/6400MHz would be ideal if you can manage it, but that might bump the cost up too much for an RGB kit. Please do not buy an A620 motherboard; get yourself a half decent B650 motherboard, it will be 100% worth it. $150ish should be enough to get something decent from Gigabyte or MSI. Case is a solid option for the price. There are better options, but they're like $90-100+ these days. Not much under $70, so if that's your budget, then there's nothing wrong with the Montech case. PCPartPicker Part List CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 7600 3.8 GHz 6-Core Processor ($178.99 @ Amazon) Motherboard: MSI B650 GAMING PLUS WIFI ATX AM5 Motherboard ($139.99 @ MSI) Memory: Silicon Power XPOWER Storm RGB 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR5-6400 CL32 Memory ($82.97 @ Newegg Sellers) Case: Montech AIR 903 MAX ATX Mid Tower Case ($65.90 @ Amazon) Total: $467.85 7600x is only a few dollars extra so I'd grab that instead, but you will need a CPU cooler since the 7600x doesn't come with one included, whereas the 7600(non X) will come with an included cooler. If you can manage to spend more on CPU, it wouldn't hurt but it's also not necessary. If you don't mind used parts, maybe someone upgrading to a 9800x3D has a 7800x3D for sale, that would be an ideal CPU if you could get one for the right price. |
