Sony’s Andrew House “surprised” at E3 Scorpio announcement

4.1
In an interview with The Guardian, SCE President Andrew House said he was surprised at Microsoft’s decision to announce the Scorpio during their E3 press conference.

“I was surprised by the step of announcing something over a year ahead of time. The dynamics of the tech industry are such that there’s a much heavier emphasis on immediate gratification than there was. A lot of that is to do with how Apple has very cleverly and elegantly managed the ‘available now’ approach. So yes, that was a slight surprise to me,” he said.

“We experienced this ourselves, when, in 2013, very much in line with our previous strategies, we announced a concept and a name for PlayStation 4, and everyone said ‘where’s the box? How dare you?!’ That was the point we realised, well, we hadn’t changed but the world around us had.”

Sony has addressed the absence of the PlayStation Neo during their own conference, and House expanded on this in the interview.

“In terms of the right time to talk about Neo, just like every other hardware launch, VR being a good example, it’s when you’ve got a full range of experiences that you can showcase to say this is why this product’s great and that’s why we’re offering it. And that time is not right now.

“[The PlayStation Neo is] a high-end version of a PlayStation 4, let’s be very clear about that, rather than a generational shift.”

Yeah right...nothing can beat Xbox right now.. especially with two consoles coming out from one franchise

Sony is ahead of Microsoft by millions of sales.

I really don't think two new consoles have any momentum sway towards Microsoft. I mean the Xbox One S is the same thing as the Xbox One, just a different design - so why would I switch to Xbox over a design change to the console. The Xbox Scorpio sounds pretty cool, however, it is over a year away from being released.

It's more powerful then the normal Xbox One and has 4k support. But considering the Xbox one is now cheaper, it will probably be the choice for parents now.

From a marketing stand point this makes no logical sense.
Point 1: Why buy Xbox One S when you can wait a year to get a better version?
Point 2: Why release the project
To the public giving away specs?

There is a reason why PlayStation didn't announce Neo, it's original design is way underpowered given the leaked specs. Microsoft yet again screwed there selves by allowing Sony to have more time to beef up the Neo making it look better than Scorpio. As far as E3 conferences go, Sony took it. 5 exclusive games while Xbox didn't have a single one (Xbox + Windows 10 isn't considered an exclusive). I love Microsoft but am disappointed. Figured they would've learned from the release of Xbox One. The conference shows different.

In my opinion, Sony won E3 through actually game content.... As far as you're exclusive logic works, you do understand that Microsoft basically owns the PC market as well, so why wouldn't they want to bring over their 'Xbox family' exclusives? Plus they are expanding upon their cross platform ideology, uniting 2 platforms and expanding the populations on those games, what's not to like? Lol

Yeah I kinda get what he is saying but Microsoft haven't promised to much other than their goals (VR ready, capable of running games in 4k and so on...) The way I see it they haven't released that much more information that what Sony has about Neo. Either way with the release of the Xbox S they had no choice but to announce project Scorpio as well or else everyone would be criticising them for not pushing for better, everyone would also jump to the conclusion that only Sony is pushing towards 4k and VR console gaming.
