Online multiplayer blamed for game sales decline, for once its not piracy
Furthermore, he thinks this decline will continue until publishers discover an effective way to source extra revenue from this continued change in gamer behaviour.
“We still believe that the biggest driver of the sales declines over the last 18 months is online multiplayer functionality, with an estimated 25m people playing many titles for hours on end,” he told investors.
“Based upon statements made by Microsoft earlier this year, it appears that millions of people are playing multiplayer games online for an average of 10 hours a week, making a serious dent in the time available to play other games.
“We remain convinced that the popularity of online multiplayer gaming has caused a decline in overall packaged product sales, and we expect this decline to persist unless the publishers change the multiplayer model.”
And while some continue to doubt it, Pachter is adamant that publishers will soon begin offering optional premium online multiplayer additions to its titles.
“This can, of course, take many forms, including doing nothing, adding premium services for a fee, or limiting the quantity of multiplayer content that is provided for free.
“While we expect the publishers to continue to offer free multiplayer content that is similar in quality to what is offered today; we expect the publishers to channel their efforts on improvements to multiplayer by offering a premium subscription service, in the hopes of driving an ever- increasing number of customers to a pay service.
“Once the publishers settle on a business model for monetizing multiplayer online game play, we expect investors to again favour the sector, and we expect to see multiples expand.”

So they want to charge for this and charge more for gold this is dumb because alot of players on the games are kids and parents arnt going to want to buy more expensive XBXL and then buy multiplayer even thoe XBXL is multiplayer

TTG SEAN yes and they make the money back on DLC so whats the problem again?I agree on what you mean because if they have a problem with people only choosing multiplayer then there should be no reason to complain because the content they release(DLC)the players buy it. as long as all developers don't follow MW2 $15 DLC

this is the biggest load of bs, we already pay for live and on top of that they want us to pay for multiplayer, wtf ms is terrible
Tsukoyomi17Posted:
yea but also if there was the addition of payment of online feature then the gaming industry would hurt theirself in that way as people would probaly not go out of way to pay more money for live then they'll have to pay for the game and now online feature but for those that would buy the game and not pay for online thy'll probaly beat the game and then sell thus expanding gaming industries problem with used games so either way you kill 2 birds with one stone they'll still lose money if they consider this

agreed i got mw2 i play online like 5 hours a week-(used to play every day) but if games didnt have multi-player i would have to buy more games to keep me entertained but since they do i would play mw2 for days and those games im not buying are hurting the gamin industrie but that sayed why would i pay 60 to play storie mode wich i dont finish on 98% of my games and then pay monthly to use what i got the game from>?

Tsukoyomi17 this is ridiculous next thing you know the solutions they would have found which would make us angry is charge us for the multiplayer portion of their games
If they do pull threw with this, its going to be major bs and it just pushes me more to selling my 360 and forgeting about gaming.
