Two UK men charged in relation to videogame betting

4.4
What appears to be the first prosecutions involving gambling on videogames have been made in the UK.

The BBC has reported on the prosecution of two Essex men – Dylan Rigby and Craig Douglas – charged with promoting a lottery and advertising unlawful gambling. Douglas has also been charged with inviting children to gamble.

The pair appeared at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court on Friday and the case has been adjourned until October 14.

This follows in the wake of the CS:GO scandal where YouTubers were promoting their own CS:GO gambling sites without disclosure and essentially encouraging kids to gamble as one lawyer put it.

The UK’s Gambling Commission has been looking into the increase in videogame gambling and estimates that its global market is around £4 billion.

They are now warning parents about the existence of such sites and the lure that they can have on underage children.

It’ll be interesting to see what kind of ripple effect this will have on the industry, if any.

Do you think the law should be more stringent when it comes to site like CSGO Lotto? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Jay I don't care who you are, what you do for a living or how much you earn. Or even how old you are for that matter. If you want to gamble YOUR own money...so be it. Why should someone else get jail time for someone else's actions. It's pathetic. Probably more YT'ers are doing it just haven't been caught yet.

I think everyone who blames others for the loss of their own money is a **** idiot. YOU BET, no one else, I agree with you completely.

The real issue is that kids don't usually have their own source of income so the money they use has to come from somewhere else. In most cases this means that parents are paying the price and possibly don't even know until they see some unusual spending on their statements.

If someone who is more or less a role model for a younger audience is taking advantage of their status for profit then that's obviously not doing the right thing. They should at least be exposed so that people are aware of what's happening.

Yeah, heard of this on Twitter. The drama cancerous channels reported the news about it. Shocked more than anything and a very scummy thing to go ahead and do.

It's ridiculous even with both of them being decent sized YouTubers they don't need this they will earn quite a a bit of money from YouTube alone.

Charged? That's a bit much for a video game. I understand that the betting thing is a no no, but the most that should have happened is their privileges to the game should have been suspended.
