PewDiePie hits 50 million subscribers, deleting his channel tomorrow

YouTube’s most popular channel, PewDiePie, hit a new milestone today, crossing 50 million subscribers. Earlier this week, in a rant about how changes to the service were costing him views, PewDiePie promised to delete his channel when he hit this milestone. In a tweet today, he said the end will arrive at noon (5PM GMT) tomorrow.

Promising to delete your channel, like announcing that you’ve decided to quit YouTube, or cancel your vlog, is not something most creators follow through on, at least not for good. But as PewDiePie put it, “complaining about YouTube gets you views.” It’s a populist punching bag that creators are only to happy to take advantage of when they are looking for a headline that will cut through the clickbait.

Decy From what i've seen he is being sarcastic.. if not he's just a money whore and good riddance.

I'm
Not a fan of his content, and he can be an asshole, but he is not a money whore. Just a lucky guy making the right content at the right time and hit gold.

He Obviously is if he's deleting his channel. Basically said : Made my money i'm out.

He wouldn't close his channel unless he had plans for the future... watch him create his own youtube type site

I've never really understood one thing. Would someone care to explain ol' stupid me how the heck did he manage to become so popular?

Of course, no offense, he does come up with pretty decent content and probably was the inventor of some of youtube gaming videos types and stuff. BUT I really do not see how he manages to stay this popular when there are a lot of talented good youtubers around, who, purely in my opinion, have a much more interesting content and personalities. Youtube SEO, marketing, what?

Honestly just curious, not trying to offend the fans.

Ellipses
Earn Not trying to sound like a white knight but you guys are blindlessly hating him for no reason.

I doubt he will actually delete his channel, it will most likely be another channel he owns. Good to see he's using his platform of millions to point out problems on YouTube. YouTube really need to fix their shit.

Exactly. I actually just started liking his new content recently and he isn't just some mineywhore like others accuse him of. Moneywhores are like almost all the faze members and reaction channels out there. Little or no effort into their videos.

Same, his contents actually gotten entertaining recently now that he doesn't do let's plays. Completely agree with what you're saying, sure he's rich but he doesn't show it off like most YouTubers.

is he coming back? ik hes rich and doesnt need to do it anymore but a lot of people like watching his videos.

dah My question is why would you delete a hard working channel and has over 3 thousand videos? In this case doesn't really matter what the answer is HE'S RICH.

His reasoning behind it, is he doesn't want inactive subscribers. He has 50 million subs, however gets about 500k-4 million views per day, that's a huge ratio difference when compared to his sub count. After the glitch with YouTube with YouTubers losing subscribers, PewDiePie thought that if he deletes his channel, starts all over again, he will have a fanbase that is actually active, matches his subs/view ratio and give him the chance to start again and try to climb back up where he once was. In the end, it's a smart business move. The video he made about him deleting his channel at 50 million subs has almost 15 million views; already 3 times more views on that video alone that his most viewed video in the last month. It's going to get him a lot of attention as the number 1 YouTuber subscriber wise; creating a new channel to start over.
