Microsoft has already announced that the upcoming hardware revision codenamed Project Scorpio will be able to play all games currently on the Xbox One, and with the ever expanding list of Backward Compatible Xbox 360 titles, that’s a list with the potential to stretch back pretty far. Some fans, though, are already thinking about the future of games beyond Scorpio—and apparently, that’s a concern Microsoft shares as well.
“It’s challenging to predict the future,” Xbox boss Phil Spencer said in response to a fan’s inquiry on Twitter. “But for me, compatibility is a feature we should preserve as long as possible.”
This lines up with Microsoft’s stated desire to create iterative, rather than generation-separated, hardware. In other words, future Xbox units would each be a gradual improvement on the last (similar to the development of PC and smartphone hardware), rather than a definitive break. Making sure that old software can run on the new hardware, though, is something that will still take a deliberate effort.@Andrew_Gilletti It's challenging to predict the future but for me compatibility is a feature we should preserve as long as possible.

We may get a better look at Microsoft’s plans either at or before this year’s E3. Barring that, Project Scorpio is scheduled to release around this holiday season.
