PS4 update 4.50 with Boost Mode, external HDD support out tomorrow

4.4
Sony will release PS4 firmware update 4.50 tomorrow, March 9, and it comes with a host of features including Boost Mode for PS4 Pro.

The firmware went into public beta on February 3, and ad previously reported, it includes external HDD support, PS VR improvements, voice chat for Remote Play and more.

The features included in the update are posted below straight from Sony.

PS4 firmware update 4.50
Boost mode (applicable to PlayStation 4 Pro only)

The PS4 Pro feature Boost Mode will provide better performance for legacy titles which have not been patched to take advantage of the faster CPU and its faster, double-sized GPU. This can provide a noticeable frame rate boost to some games with variable frame rates, along with frame rate stability for games programmed to run at 30Hz or 60Hz.

Depending on the game, the increased CPU speed may also result in shorter load times. Boost Mode is not guaranteed to work with all titles. Turning the setting off will allow the game to be played in a mode that replicates the standard PS4.

Boost Mode can be activated from the PS4’s Settings menu. Go to ‘Settings’, then ‘System’, then scroll down to ‘Boost Mode’ and tick the box to turn Boost Mode on.

External HDD
Allows the user to download and store PS4 games and apps to an external HDD. Insert your USB 3.0 HDD into your console, select it from ‘USB Storage Devices’ from ‘Devices’ in Settings to format it so it’s ready to use. Any previously stored content will be wiped from the HDD.

Note: compatible HDDs need to be USB 3.0 or later, between 250GB (min) – 8TB (max). There is no guarantee that all USB storage devices are compatible with your system.

PS VR Improvements
Those playing a PS VR will notice upon returning to the PS4 home screen the resolution will appear to be in lower resolution when in‘Social Screen’. Following the update, the resolution of the system screen displayed on the TV will be significantly better when out of VR mode.

Also, the resolution of Cinematic Mode on PS VR will improve if the PS VR screen size is set to Small or Medium, the framerate of content viewed in Cinematic Mode goes up from 90Hz to 120Hz with this update.

PS VR will now support Blu-ray 3D discs and users will have the ability to watch them in stereoscopic 3D via the headset.

Voice chat for Remote Play
Voice chat is now available when using Remote Play on Windows PC, Mac or an Xperia device. You can switch your mic on and off via the microphone icon on the Tool Bar of the Remote Play app.

Off-console availability
An Icon shaped like a smartphone has been added which indicates a when a player logged into PSN but away from their console.

Custom Wallpaper and Profile Color
Head to Settings, then select Theme to personalize the screen. From here, choose ‘Custom’ and select any screenshot and set it as the new PS4 home screen wallpaper. A new option to better personalize the user’s Profile page is available. If a custom cover image is selected, the PS4 will generate a choice of supporting colors based on that image to change the page’s background color.

Share Activity
User now have more choice in what they wish to share on their Activity Feed. They can create custom stories with text, screenshots, player and game tags. Find the post tool on What’s New, your Profile or Content Info Screen.

Activity feed privacy
The privacy settings can be changed for individual posts. Users can alter who sees Activities via the same-named tab in the Sharing Your Experience section of Settings. Users can decide the level of privacy for videos, screenshots, broadcasts, PS Store and PS Music when uploaded. They can also alter who gets to see that content after the post has been shared.

Save Data Shortcut
Hover over a game title icon and press the Options button. Users will be given a choice to ‘Upload/Download Saved Data’ from the the PS4’s home screen that let them upload the saved data on the PS4 to PS Plus online storage and download the saved data from PS Plus online storage to the PS4 with ease.

From Capture Gallery to SHAREfactory
Select a chosen screenshot or video in Capture Gallery, and by pressing the Options button there will be a choice to go straight into SHAREfactory and start editing.

I don't have much games on my Ps4 but I'm sure I'll make use of the extra HDD space someday.

This is pretty cool, and an external HDD would help a lot of players who have numerous games

A much needed update in my eyes. The original PS4 500 GB is just not enough for regular gamers.
