A video of the Red Dead Redemption V mod went up on YouTube yesterday, but it was quickly struck down. Apparently, the legal wrangling didn’t end there. According to a representative for .White, the modding group that was working on Red Dead Redemption V, the project is officially (red) dead.
“I know this is hard pill to swallow, but as you may have noticed we got contacted. And we sadly have to say we are stopping this project. So, thanks guys, we were all so happy to see this, but it isn't going to happen. Sorry.”
Our modders don’t state who they were contacted by, but it was pretty obviously Rockstar Games or parent company Take-Two Interactive. It’s disappointing to see the publisher shut down a fan project like this, but essentially doing a full remake of one of Rockstar’s games, complete with promised additional content and improved graphics, goes beyond the scope of a regular mod. The folks are Rockstar generally seem pretty chill and probably didn’t want to have to shut this down, but publishers have to defend their properties.
The real tragedy here is that the modders behind Red Dead Redemption V ended up wasting three years of hard work, although they may not have entirely given up hope. When the .White rep was asked if they might revive the project down the line, he had this to say…
“Why would I throw away 3 years of work! That’s insane man. We could always try.”
