Hot on the heels of a rumor that we could be getting new PlayStation hardware as soon as next year, another rumor indicates that the best-selling PlayStation 4 console could be getting a boost with a potential price cut.

The company has already indicated that it plans to sell another 18 million units this year, between the PlayStation 4 Slim and the PlayStation 4 Pro, and now Michael Pachter, an analyst for the industry, has chimed in, indicating that Sony could be headed for a price cut soon.

The system is doing well, but may not be able to keep up with the company’s greatest success to date, the PlayStation 2. “I don’t think it will outsell the PS2, mostly because the competition from Xbox and Switch will soak up too much of the addressable market,” he said. “Yes, if they price the PS4 correctly, they can sell another 18 million, and I think the forecast suggests that there is a price cut coming.”

Sony has cut the system price in the past, as part of a temporary sale to push the PlayStation 4 out the door. It’s been marked down to $249 before, and more than likely, if there were a permanent cut, it would be around this price range – which certainly wouldn’t be a bad thing.

Microsoft could easily be following suit around the same time, though, as it’s preparing its Project Scorpio hardware to arrive on the market later this year, meaning that its Xbox One S could see a similar price cut, to around $250 or so. Again, that’s not confirmed, but considering the new set of hardware coming our way, it certainly wouldn’t be a surprise.

E3 is just around the corner, so if any sort of announcement for price cuts is likely to happen, it’ll be there, but the question is what company will announce their cut first. Considering that the Nintendo Switch goes for around $299, that would put the systems at more of an advantage at a lower price.
