This year, however? Turnaround. Pretty much complete turnaround. Activision debuted the first gameplay from the forthcoming Call of Duty: WWII, and it’s received nothing but praise. Not only that, but it’s set a nice little standard for trailer views in its own right (but without the million dislikes – whew).
The company confirmed during its quarterly earnings call this week that the trailer has been seen more than 10 million times by fans (totaling 14 million views), and has gotten incredible praise for its realism and insanely good visuals. It also made note that the game’s live stream reveal, which happened last Wednesday, was also the most watched one in the franchise’s history.
Activision had plenty more to say about the franchise as well. It noted that initial pre-orders for the game have already gotten off to a very strong start, mainly thanks to promotions surrounding its special editions and certain giveaways, like a Call of Duty: WWII baseball hat that was given away by GameStop in the opening week for pre-orders. Activision didn’t go into specific numbers, but things are certainly looking good for the series.
It made note that its games have seen 48 million active users in the first quarter, though that's actually a bit of a drop year-over-year, mainly due to Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare. While that sequel went on to be a best-seller, it left an overall negative impact on the franchise, mainly because not everyone was excited about going into space. The more grounded Call of Duty: WWII should be a nice turnaround from that, as early feedback has indicated.
