Rise of the Horde brings with it a host of new content, starting with 15 new skills for players to kit out their survivor. These skills will give the Scout invisibility with the use of Cloak, the Heavy additional heavy weapon damage with the use of Berserker, and the Sniper greater headshot damage rewards with the use of Magic Bullet, just to name a few. All existing skills can also be upgraded to level six, improving their efficiency. Additionally, boss waves at wave 30, 40, and 50 will drop a random skill, with harder difficulties holding increased likelihood of rare drops.
Two new difficulties can be found in the Rise of the Horde update, with the ominous names of Inconceivable and Ironman. Both difficulties will be playable in campaign and Horde mode, and each bring slightly unique challenges to the experience. Inconceivable—a step up from the Insane difficulty—will reduce health for both players and enemies in the campaign, plus cut down on ammo, while in Horde mode, enemies get a boost to their lethality. Ironman is even more daunting, as dying once in the campaign will start the entire experience over. Similarly, the difficulty removes revive options from Horde mode, and one failed wave will mean the end of the challenge.
This new content can be enjoyed on two new maps coming in the update; Avalanche and Rust Lung. The maps are remasters from previous entries—Gears of War 2 and Gears of War 3, respectively—so fans can take this new action to some old battlegrounds. Versus players are also getting a treat in the form of the Special Event mode Golden Gun, which pits players against each other with one bullet in a hip-firing Boltok for the ultimate game of chicken.
