The event will run from June 8th at 5 p.m. PDT until June 12th at 11:59 p.m. PDT and allow players to earn double the amount of XP, meaning twice as many loot boxes as normal. According to Blizzard, the bonus will apply to “nearly all sources of in-game XP,” including:
Time spent in a match
Completing a match
Completing consecutive matches
Winning a match
Backfilling a match in progress
Earning medals
Blizzard adds that the XP bonus will also stack multiplicatively with existing group and IGR bonuses.
The double XP bonus arrives just in time for the end of Overwatch‘s Anniversary in-game event. The event kicked off on May 23rd and introduced over 100 new items to the game, including 11 new legendary skins.
Since the beginning of the event, fans have been complaining about the difficulty of obtaining all 11 legendaries in the given time, without resorting to buying additional loot boxes. Game director Jeff Kaplan responded to concerns by saying that the team is listening, but didn’t offer any solutions to the problem at the time. Presumably this double XP event is in response to the complaints.
Overwatch is available now on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.
