Popular GTA modding tool receives a Cease and Desist from Take Two

4.8
After nearly ten years in operation, popular Grand Theft Auto modder software OpenIV has been taken offline by its developers after they reportedly received a cease and desist letter from Take Two Interactive.

GooD-NTS, OpenIV's lead developer posted to the GTA Reddit forums on Thursday that he had received a letter on June 5th, 2017 that was "illiterate both technically and grammatically" demanding that the software be taken down because it would "allow third parties to defeat security features of its software and modify that software in violation Take-Two's rights."

"Yes, we can go to court and yet again prove that modding is fair use and our actions are legal. Yes, we could. But we decided not to," GooD-NTS said. "Going to court will take at least few months of our time and huge amount of efforts, and, at best, we'll get absolutely nothing. Spending time just to restore status quo is really unproductive, and all the money in the world can't compensate the loss of time."

OpenIV is a powerful modding tool enabling users to create everything from "Red v. Blue"-style machinimas to adding entirely new vehicles and weapons to the game. We've reached out to Take Two Interactive for confirmation and comment and will update the post upon their reply.

Take Two Interactive has responded. The company states, "Take-Two's actions were not specifically targeting single player mods. Unfortunately OpenIV enables recent malicious mods that allow harassment of players and interfere with the GTA Online experience for everybody. We are working to figure out how we can continue to support the creative community without negatively impacting our players."

kerrry Dang, Xbox One is taking modding pretty seriously, don't really wanna be buying multiple Xbox One's yet if they take these kinds of punishments to banning consoles. Great to see more modding coming into the world though, things are getting exciting.

Pretty sure this article is referring to PC mods but ok.

Kind of pathetic if you ask me. What's so wrong with people adding or replacing cars, textures, map add-ons etc in single player. Very rarely would I come across anyone with mods online on GTA, at least on PC anyway, shame the same couldn't be said with last-gen consoles. Even at that, there was servers like FiveM which allowed people to play online with added and replaced cars with the risk of a ban. That being said I mainly stuck to single player messing around with custom cars and things like the v-stancer mod. Hopefully the petition gets enough people on-board. There was talk of YouTubers boycotting and refusing to make videos on GTA V giving it less attention, sure there might still be smaller channels posting GTA videos, but if enough of the larger channels just stop it might be enough for them to reconsider.

Barclay The game is four years old why would take two even care, especially if this modding tool is for single player. Shoulda taken the Bethesda approach and embrace their modding community not punish them

The tool allows users to look at how to game has been made on a coding format, however i do think take two don't actually know what it actually does. This tool has actually been supported by RockstarGames as it has helped them recruit modders & coders to their games.

I can see someone ripping the code from "OpenIV" and creating a new program and calling it different.

TakeTwo just don't like people having fun theirs no harm in single player.

Lol "illiterate both technically and grammatically", I would think a company as big as theirs would give a proper notice.
