Sony shady on PS5 release date but confirm new console is coming

Rumors were recently doing the rounds that Sony may adopt an upgrade approach to new iterations of the PlayStation console rather than release a fully-fledged PS5, but now President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, Shawn Layden, has confirmed that a PlayStation 5 will arrive at some point.

In an interview with German gaming site, Golem.de – following a statement about the PS4 Pro approach to console upgrades – the question was posed: "This means that you are more likely to rely on a real Playstation 5 - whenever that will be?"

Layden replied: "Yes. It will probably be some time".

There’s been plenty of speculation on the PS5 release date, including some analysts claiming it will launch in 2019 at the earliest, but likely 2020.

There’s still plenty of power in the PS4, specifically in the PS4 Pro, that is still untapped and some developers believe that its boundaries can still be pushed with the potential of photo-realistic graphics before the PS5 release.

The PS4 launched in late 2013, so a 2020 release date would mean a seven-year life-cycle for the current generation.

I'm happy to play my regular PS4, different versions of the console like PS4 Pro doesn't interest me, it's a money making scheme for a little bit better quality. I'd prefer there to be one console, different hard drive capacities but that is it, until the next generation of console is ready for release.

I see it coming 2019 tbh, push out another console as soon as they can. Hopefully the PS5 keeps the PS4 controller, I like it.

Hopefully on the PS5 they allow alternative OS installls. The console could be an awesome desktop alternative if the specs are much better than the PS4.
