Xbox One X has one massive downside if you don’t own a 4K TV

4.5
It’s a good thing that the Xbox One X comes with a 1TB hard drive, because you’re going to need the extra space.

One of the most-touted features of the new consoles is its ability to play games in full 4K. However, this may not always be a good thing. As one Microsoft representative has confirmed, the console will download 4K assets for all games—regardless of whether or not you actually own a 4K TV.

“With the launch of Xbox One X, when it comes to game content our intention is to download the correct assets to the correct console,” the representative told Stevivor. “This means, regardless of the TV you are playing on, 4K assets will be downloaded to Xbox One X (if available) and the standard 1080p assets will be downloaded to an Xbox One S.”

This also means that even though 4K files are available, the Xbox One S will continue to work by upscaling 1080p games to 4K, rather than working straight from 4K assets. The representative added that “specific implementation” of how these assets are divided will be “up to the developer.”

Still, all of those 4K assets are bound to take up a ton of memory. Forza Horizon 7, for example, will take up 100GB of space with the highest-resolution textures, meaning that one game alone could be a tenth of your Xbox One X’s hard drive. According to the representative, Microsoft is working on a way to make the downloads more efficient for users, but the wording makes it sound as though any solutions will be left up to developers on a case-by-case basis.

The Xbox One X releases on November 7th, with a starting price of $499.

I have a 42" LG 4K TV and an LG 4K widescreen monitor. I'm pretty well set up. This actually is unfortunate for a lot of people tho

When I get my Xbox One X I will also get a 4K tv or just buy one before the release date.

Mikey I think everyone has a 4k tv now days anyway unless your living in a cave on a deserted island lmao

I have a 22 by 24 Samsung which is 720p, bought years ago and it's still $200 at Best Buy today. Might go to a 32 for 1080p but every 4K is $600-2k or more unless it's a cheap brand or refurb. I'm starting to think 1080 would be a good upgrade from 720 and there's no reason to jump to 4K, especially with that price and size tv. Maybe once I have a career and not a PT job lol

Sakon I own a 4k tv so it's not a issue to me, but I can see how it will effect people without one.

Brilliant feedback mate. Beneficial as always.

Decy Storage has always been a problem....

Not really, External HDD's are very cheap I got a 2TB for $60. And Xbox has always allowed external hard drives where PS4 finally added support just a few months ago.

Fibril Wow, kinda sucks. I hope they bring an option to download 4K assets separately or we'll be forced to pay an extra $100 for more space...

Or just don't buy the console if you want to download games without the 4k assets.
